For the second time in a month, crews from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11-0 will cause temporary lane closures and restrictions for pothole patching across a large part of Route 51. The patching, which will run from the West End Bridge to Curry Hollow Road, will last from Jan. 7 to 25, at the least. That is an approximately 8.7-mile stretch. The work will occur in various locations across the busy state road, possibly hitting the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of West End, Duquesne Heights, Beechview, Mount Washington, Beltzhoover, Bon Air, Brookline, Carrick and/or Overbrook, and/or the boroughs of Whitehall, Brentwood and/or Baldwin. Erin Molchany began her first term as a state representative on New Year's Day with a swearing-in ceremony at the state Capitol in Harrisburg. Molchany, a Democrat who bested Republican Chris Cratsley in November's general election, will represent Pennsylvania's 22nd House District, which includes part of Whitehall Borough and all of Baldwin Township. Brian Rampolla, a frequent public voice at Baldwin-Whitehall School Board meetings, wrote a May 27 letter to the editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that is critical of Pete Wagner, Martin Michael Schmotzer and the Allegheny County Democratic Committee. REMINDER: Timing Keeps Lunny on Ballot, but Votes Won't Count As if this year's primary election for Pennsylvania's 22nd House District seat wasn't confusing enough, voters will have to clear yet another hurdle on April 24 by avoiding the temptation to select Shawn Lunny's name from the ballot. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court decided on Friday that Lunny's name was to be removed from the ballot, but because the ballot cannot be changed so close to Election Day, Lunny's name will remain. Nevertheless, selecting Lunny's name will be a waste of a vote, as all selections of the young Democrat will not be counted. Voters can still vote for Lunny as a write-in candidate, though. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court decided on Friday that Shawn Lunny's name is to be removed from the ballot of April 24's Democratic primary election for Pennsylvania's 22nd House District seat. Candidates for that race were required to submit 300 valid signatures of registered Democratic voters in the 22nd District, but the court found that "the Nomination Petition of Shawn Lunny contains less than the requisite 300 signatures required to be a candidate for Representative in the General Assembly." Thus, Erin Molchany and Martin Michael Schmotzer will be the only Democratic names on the ballot for the 22nd District seat on April 24.
