Giant Eagle Manager Nabs 'Gangster Squad' Thief, Police Say

The store's manager has helped to thwart theft four times since November.

Caste Village Giant Eagle Manager Phillip Scott did his best John O'Mara impression on May 1, helping to nab his fourth would-be thief since November 2012, according to Whitehall Borough police Deputy Chief Richard M. Danko. At around 12:19 p.m. that day, Whitehall police received a call from the store reporting the apprehension of a shoplifter, Danko said. Upon investigation, police learned that Carly Sarasnick, 33, of 636 Judith Dr. in Baldwin Borough, was stopped by Scott as she tried to leave the store without paying for three videodiscs in her possession, including—coincidentally enough—a copy of the 2013 movie Gangster Squad starring Sean Penn as notorious thief Mickey Cohen. Josh Brolin plays Sgt. O'Mara of the Los Angeles Police …

The one I spoke to works at the Bethel Park location, he's been there about 2 years now. I did not ask how much money he makes, as that's really none of my business, unless he had brought it up himself, which he did not in that conversation. As you and I both said, things could have changed, and there are other variables to consider.   more ›

Charges Lessened, Probation Sentence for Whitehall Teen in Drug Bust

Three felony counts for intent to deliver were withdrawn.

A Whitehall Borough teenager pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors but avoided three felony drug charges as the result of his April 24 non-jury trial at the Allegheny County Courthouse, according to an online docket sheet. Ryan Christopher Brooks, 18, of 3197 Bel Air Dr., pleaded guilty before Judge Anthony M. Mariani to two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of making repairs, selling or otherwise dealing in, using or possessing an offensive weapon. Meantime, Brooks' felony charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver were withdrawn. The guilty plea is labeled as "negotiated" on the docket sheet. Brooks was sentenced to complete one year of probation for both drug misdemeanors and three …

Whitehall AutoZone Employee Charged with Stealing from Work

And three other stories in these borough police notes.

AutoZone Employee Charged with Retail Theft Police officers went to the AutoZone on Route 51 in Whitehall Borough at around 11:50 a.m. on Thursday to speak with the store's loss prevention officer, according to Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi. The loss prevention officer informed police that an employee of the store—Danielle Hibbs, 36, of 2089 Plainview Ave. in Pittsburgh's Brookline neighborhood—was caught taking money from the store's register and stealing merchandise, Dolfi said. The approximate value of the cash and merchandise taken was $87. The theft occurred across numerous incidents during an unspecified period of time, but "it came to a head" on Thursday, Dolfi said. Whitehall police are citing Hibbs with retail theft. …

Two Vehicles Damaged in Whitehall, One by Arrow

Also, a defiant trespass charge, and police Chief Dolfi warns of identity theft.

The Driveway Games A resident from the 500 block of Marylea Avenue in Whitehall Borough contacted police at around 10 a.m. on April 10 to report that his vehicle was damaged by an arrow, Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. The resident told police that he parked his vehicle in his driveway during the afternoon of April 9 and noticed the damage the next morning. Two arrows were found on or near his property and a circular hole was left in the right rear-quarter panel of his Jeep. The arrows were camouflaged and had the words "Whitetail Extreme" written in white ink across them. The resident did not give anyone permission to hunt or target-practice on his property, Dolfi said. The chief did not rule out that a neighbor might have …

Scam Targets Grandmother in Whitehall Borough

Whitehall police chief warns residents.

A Whitehall Borough resident from the Steeplechase townhomes area contacted police at around 10 a.m. on Sunday to report a scam, Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. The victim said that she received a call on Thursday from someone claiming to be her grandson. The supposed grandson said that he was in Brazil, where he had recently damaged a rental car, and that if his grandmother did not wire him $3,800, he would be taken to jail. "Obviously, the victim was greatly concerned for the grandson," Dolfi said, and she decided to send the money. Then, on Friday, the woman received a similar call asking for another $4,400. She did not send the money in that instance, contacting police instead, who told her that she had been victimized by …

Just wondering if the person who calls knows the grandchild's name. Does he say, this is so and so, or this is your grandson? What if they have multiple grandchildren, how do they know which one is supposedly calling? Also, wouldn't they recognize their own grandchild's voice? And you would think in most cases if the grandchild was going out of the country, the grandparent would probably hear …   more ›

Theft at Former Whitehall Country Club Site

And three other stories in these Whitehall police notes.

Theft The caretaker of the property at 3091 Provost Rd.—formerly home to the Whitehall Country Club and to Rising Sun Martial Arts—reported at around 11:30 on Thursday that three sheds on the property had been entered into and that approximately 30 feet of copper pipe was missing, Whitehall Borough police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. Also, several fixtures from the property's restrooms had been taken. The caretaker had not been at the site in several weeks, Dolfi said. The incident is under investigation. Whitehall Man Charged Whitehall police responded to the 1600 block of Parkline Drive in the Wallace (Prospect) Park area at around 5:58 p.m. on Feb. 12 for a report of a disturbance, Dolfi said. When officers arrived at the scene, they …

20 Year Resident of Baldwin/Whitehall

1:35 pm on Wednesday, February 20, 2013

How sad that there is so much turmoil in the Whitehall Place/Prospect Park apartments. It used to be a pretty nice place to rent. The management company running those apartments has experienced frequent change, though, and the rules of occupancy are not always enforced which probably causes strife amongst tenants; strife that the Whitehall Police must then attempt to settle.   more ›

B-W School Board, Public Talk Safety After Newtown Massacre

Is there a need for armed guards at local schools?

In Case of Emergency ...  The topic of school safety dominated discussions on Wednesday night at the first Baldwin-Whitehall School Board meeting since a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, CT, in mid-December. Multiple school board members, the district superintendent, a student board representative and a vocal member of the public each spoke on the issue, and the theme was constant: Baldwin-Whitehall, like all school districts, is vulnerable to attack. "I don't know how anybody can fight against a military assault rifle," school board President Nancy Sciulli DiNardo said toward the end of Wednesday's meeting before also saying that school district officials "need to do everything we can within the…

Whitehall Police Investigating Front-Porch Pranks

And an assault arrest to report in these Whitehall Borough police notes.

Dangerous Prank Whitehall Borough police went to the 100 block of Felix Drive at around 8:41 p.m. on Saturday in response to a complaint of a loud bang and smoke coming from a resident's porch there. Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said that, when officers arrived, they found a 2-liter bottle partially filled with some type of liquid on the porch, as well as aluminum foil. The device acted as a type of homemade explosive, he said. Although nobody was injured in the incident, Dolfi said that the event, which appears to have been a prank, is very dangerous. "People could be seriously injured when a chemical reaction is involved," he said. While Whitehall police were on the scene of the Felix incident, an event occurred in nearby South…

:) That or science class. I know we learned a number of fun chemical reactions there. The problem, of course, as any kid who's messed with pyrotechnics knows, is that it's easy to make a big explosion and more difficult to make a small one.   more ›

Whitehall Police Use Informant to Arrest Heroin Dealer

Arrest happened on Nov. 19 along Streets Run Road.

A SWAT team was ready, but it turns out that it wasn't necessary to bring down a heroin dealer in Whitehall Borough in mid-November, Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. Police arrested Joshua Gunter, 24, of 455 Streets Run Rd. in Whitehall, on Nov. 19 after Dolfi said that a confidential informant engaged in a "drug-buy" with Gunter at Gunter's residence that afternoon. Dolfi said that police officers from the nearby Baldwin Borough, Bethel Park and Mt. Lebanon police departments, as well as a Castle Shannon K-9 unit, joined Whitehall police on Nov. 19. Groups from those and other municipalities helped to form a South Hills Area Council of Governments SWAT team prior to the arrest that day, but Dolfi said that the SWAT team was …

A Park Named for Maddox Derkosh?

And other notes from Wednesday night's Whitehall Council meeting.

A Park for Maddox? Frank Vallone of Highgrove Road has asked the Whitehall Borough Council to support a plan that would honor the memory of Maddox Derkosh, the 2-year-old Whitehall boy killed in a tragic mauling incident at the Pittsburgh Zoo on Nov. 4. Vallone asked council members at their meeting on Wednesday night what would need to be done to name one of Whitehall's public parks after Maddox. Council President William J. Veith told Vallone that the council is "looking at what options we have" regarding a tribute to Maddox. But for now, Veith said, the council wishes to respect a "grieving period" for his family. Tax Refund for Whitehall Place The owners of the Whitehall Place Apartments complex in the Wallace (Prospect) Park area are …
