UPDATE (Monday, Feb. 25): Video of the dance was added to this article's media gallery. ... South Hills Village shoppers might be in for a fun surprise on Sunday, Feb. 24. South Park Middle School students are scheduled to break out in a dance routine between 2 and 4:30 p.m. on the lower level of the mall, near the entrance of the soon-to-be-opening Target store. The dance is part of the students' Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. The performance is for encouraging students to pledge to stand up to bullying. Weed 'Em Out If weeds from private property are spreading out and covering public roadways, who should be responsible for cutting them down? Whitehall Borough Councilman Robert McKown brought up the topic at Wednesday night's council meeting. McKown said that he's noticed high grass and other shrubs crowding both lanes of travel along Curry Road in the southern part of Whitehall. "It's actually impeding upon the travel area of the road," McKown said, citing safety concerns. "You can't even see the curbs anymore." McKown suggested that Whitehall's Public Works employees travel both sides of Curry and cut down the weeds that have moved past private property lines. Friends and neighbors from across Baldwin Borough and its surrounding municipalities descended on Churchview Avenue and the Baldwin Borough Municipal Complex on Saturday for the 2012 version of Baldwin Community Day. The daylong event—booths opened at 7 a.m., and fireworks went off at around 10 p.m.—featured the annual Baldwin Mile race, community parade down Churchview, free swimming at the Baldwin Borough Swimming Pool, food, amusement rides and a horde of other activities and performances to allow a large part of Pittsburgh's South Hills area to display some civic pride. Students currently in grades 8-11 can try out for the Baldwin High School dance team later this month, but an informational meeting for interested dancers will be held before that on Wednesday, May 9, in Room 203 of the high school at 4 p.m. Actual auditions will be held from May 15-17. Previous dance experience is preferred but not necessary. Paynter Elementary educators tripped the light fantastic at Baldwin High School on Saturday night.
"Dancing with the Teachers," a fundraiser put on by educators from W.R. Paynter Elementary School for the benefit of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, was held at the Baldwin High School auditorium on Saturday night. Contestants Jamey and Greg Pryber, Raymond Stark and Heather Marchese, Brooke Stewart and Frank Blackmore, Patricia Fusco and Mark Yost, Jared Hoffman and Mindy Golvash, Darlene DeFilippo and Kent Berkey, and Christine Leslie and Nate Hart competed for the chance to win a mirror ball trophy resembling the one from ABC's hit reality show "Dancing with the Stars." For the benefit of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and for anyone lucky enough to watch it, the Baldwin-Whitehall School District will present the 2012 edition of "Dancing with the Teachers" at the Baldwin High School auditorium on Saturday, May 5, at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $5 each at W.R. Paynter Elementary School in north Baldwin Borough. Call 412-885-7535 for more details. "Dancing with the Teachers" will feature performances from seven Baldwin-Whitehall educators this year, as well as a performance by the Art and Style Youth Ballroom Dancers. Male and female students modeled the latest in prom fashions.
Click through the media gallery located toward the top of this page to see how some of Baldwin High School's seniors looked in the latest prom fashions on Sunday afternoon. The students—male and female—strutted their stuff on the Baldwin High auditorium stage after pre-show performances by theater arts students from J.E. Harrison Middle School and Baldwin High, and dance students from the Dance Workshop by Shari. Each student volunteered for the event, with the models sporting rented duds that other students may choose to wear at Baldwin's Senior Prom, which is on Friday, June 1. UPDATE: The deadline to buy tickets is Feb. 10! The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch will be there. Baldwin High School will host a 2012 Senior Class Prom Fashion Show in its auditorium on Sunday, Feb. 19. The event is designed for families of the Baldwin-Whitehall School District to enjoy a day of shopping, entertainment, prizes, brunch and the latest in prom fashions. The event will officially run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 19, but doors will open at 10 a.m. for attendees to check out vendors and to buy tickets for a Chinese auction. Brunch—in the high school's main cafeteria—will include wedding soup, fresh fruit, pasta salad and mini croissant sandwiches. In addition, eight cakes—donated by local bakeries—will be raffled off.
