Fights Along Curry Road Cap Youth Football Banquet

The incident occurred on Saturday night at Salvatore's in south Baldwin Borough.

Baldwin Borough police went to the Curry Commons shopping plaza in south Baldwin at around 10:33 p.m. on Saturday for a report of multiple fights and a driver suspected by police of being intoxicated leaving the plaza's parking lot with children. According to a police report of the incident, multiple witnesses said that they saw Gregory M. Borneman, 31, of Chelton Avenue in Pittsburgh's Brookline neighborhood, fighting with other men both before and after driving his car in and near the parking lot. I was there. In fact, I agree that no one should have been drinking. I don't believe that people should drink around kids, as my own personal value system. That is why I stated that in a previous comment. All I was saying is I know that the fights were protecting the children and in my eyes that doesn't make them idiots. It makes me grateful that there are still people that would put themselves …   more ›

Burglary on Orchard Hill Drive

And three other stories in these Whitehall police notes.

Burglary on Orchard Hill Drive The caretaker of a house in Whitehall Borough's 5300 block of Orchard Hill Drive contacted police at around 11:55 p.m. on Nov. 20 to report that that house had been burglarized, Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. Police officers arrived at the house shortly thereafter and found evidence indicating that it had been broken into, Dolfi said—namely, a window had been damaged. Dolfi said that the caretaker reported several "collectibles" missing from the house, but the total amount of stolen items and their aggregate value is not yet known. The Allegheny County district attorney's crime scene unit has processed the scene, Dolfi said, including taking physical evidence from it, like fingerprints, and …

I would like to open a place called the “Barter Barn" in the 2,000 SF vacant space in the Bottom Dollar shopping center. This store will be open to the public where people could come to trade various things with each other…….sounds like a pawn shop, you say….NAY! What would make the “Barter Barn" so unique is that you are only allowed to trade translucent things with each other. For example, one …   more ›

Weeds Along Borough Roads Irk Whitehall Council Members

The shrubbery is crowding lanes of traffic, and other notes from Wednesday's council meeting.

Weed 'Em Out If weeds from private property are spreading out and covering public roadways, who should be responsible for cutting them down? Whitehall Borough Councilman Robert McKown brought up the topic at Wednesday night's council meeting. McKown said that he's noticed high grass and other shrubs crowding both lanes of travel along Curry Road in the southern part of Whitehall. "It's actually impeding upon the travel area of the road," McKown said, citing safety concerns. "You can't even see the curbs anymore." McKown suggested that Whitehall's Public Works employees travel both sides of Curry and cut down the weeds that have moved past private property lines. He also wants those properties' owners to be contacted about maintaining their…

Jon agree, I ride and it is terrible on the roads that you mentioned. If we were in Mt Lebanon, the Road Personal would be cutting down the weeds that are growing out of people yards and the home owners would be getting a nice healthy bill for the work. It is all over Whitehall that some of the home owners are lazy and don't cut these weeds down. I have taken the weedwacker to my neighbors weeds …   more ›

Visions for Vacancies: What Could Fill a Need at Curry Road Commons?

Spaces are available for lease.

It wasn't too long ago that this writer would frequent the Curry Commons shopping center in Baldwin Borough for a hoagie from Mariana's Pizza or a carton of iced tea from the corner mini-mart. Man, what was the name of that place? Haf-Mart? In any event, those stores are long gone, and with them has come vacancies along Curry Road. But Burns & Scalo Real Estate Services has those properties available for lease, and the annual rent, according to the Burns & Scalo website, is negotiable. Currently occupying space at Curry Commons are places like Salvatore's (banquet hall), South Hills Embroidery (apparel and design shop) and McCoy's Pub (bar/restaurant), among others. Across the street is Legacy Lanes (bowling) and a couple of auto repair …
