Blood Drive in Honor of Sgt. Miller Set for Tuesday

Multiple groups have organized the event.

Multiple groups have organized a blood drive in honor of Sgt. Ralph Miller, the Baldwin Borough police officer injured on Feb. 10 in a friendly fire incident in central Baldwin. The drive will be held at the Baldwin Borough Municipal Complex along Churchview Avenue in north Baldwin from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, with donations being taken by the Central Blood Bank. Miller is well known around Baldwin Borough and its surrounding area as a child car seat inspector. Miller does not charge for that work and has been known to inspect seats for parents even on days that he is not scheduled to work. A 14-year police veteran, Miller was promoted to the rank of sergeant in February 2011. Before becoming a police officer, Miller was a truck driver …

Baldwin's Saint Albert Fish Fry in Running for Y108 Broadcast

Vote now to have 'Jimmy and Monty' appear in north Baldwin.

Saint Albert the Great Catholic Parish could be the site of the next special broadcast of the "Jimmy and Monty In The Morning" show on Y108. Saint Albert's, found off of Churchview Avenue in north Baldwin Borough, is up against seven other Pittsburgh-area nonprofits this week in Jimmy and Monty's hometown fish fry contest. The place with the most votes by Friday—VOTE HERE—will earn a special visit from the radio morning show hosts that night with parts of their appearance recorded for broadcast. As of 10:30 on Tuesday morning, the Etna Volunteer Fire Department has a sizeable lead, but should the top two places finish with vote totals less than 1 percent from one another, Jimmy and Monty may broadcast from both locations. Saint Albert's …

LIST: Leaders Discuss Which Roads Should Be Repaved in Baldwin Boro

And other notes from Tuesday night's Baldwin Council meeting.

Road Repair The Baldwin Borough Council is reviewing a preliminary list of 29 Baldwin streets and 30 total borough spots that are in need of some sort of road repair. The borough's 2013 budget shows $800,000 allocated for such repair (up $50,000 from 2012), but the estimated cost to repair all 30 spots discussed at Tuesday night's council agenda meeting is over $3 million, meaning that not every troubled spot can likely be corrected this year. The list includes 15 spots each in north and south Baldwin: Instead of completely repaving each of these places for long-term restoration, the borough could save money and extend the life of existing pavement by merely seal coating, or "tar-and-chipping," troubled spots, borough engineer Larry …

Two Chances for Baldwin Residents to See Santa

North Baldwin welcomes the big man on Dec. 5, followed by south Baldwin on Dec. 8.

There'll be no excuse for Baldwin Borough families to miss Santa Claus this year, as the jolly old elf will appear at both ends of the borough in a four-day period. North Baldwin residents will have their crack at the big man on Dec. 5, as the Baldwin Kiwanis Club is sponsoring a Christmas event at the Baldwin Municipal Complex along Churchview Avenue that night from 6 to 8:30. The event is free to the public and will feature Christmas carolers, a deejay, crafters, hot chocolate, coffee, other treats, face-painting, the lighting of the borough Christmas tree and, of course, a visit from Santa. In the spirit of giving, folks are asked to donate a non-perishable food item or money to be given to local food pantries. Plenty of parking is …

Also, an attempted burglary and another DUI arrest in these Baldwin Borough police notes.

Two Baldwin Men Charged in Connection with DUI Incident A Baldwin Borough police officer stopped motorist Aaron Robert Sohl, 31, of Churchview Avenue in Baldwin Borough, at around 12:54 a.m. on Thursday for failing to obey a stop sign at the intersection of Churchview and Willett Road, according to a police report. We need to get these DUI idiots off the streets, not by letting them off. You get their attention by hitting them harder with heavier penalties.   more ›

I would like to open a place called the “Barter Barn" in the 2,000 SF vacant space in the Bottom Dollar shopping center. This store will be open to the public where people could come to trade various things with each other…….sounds like a pawn shop, you say….NAY! What would make the “Barter Barn" so unique is that you are only allowed to trade translucent things with each other. For example, one …   more ›

Alex Vogel saved a fellow firefighter during a Churchview Avenue blaze in March.

Alex Vogel, a firefighter with Baldwin Independent Fire Company No. 1, is one of the six community heroes who were honored on Thursday at a 2012 American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast at Pittsburgh's CONSOL Energy Center.
