20 Year Resident of Baldwin/Whitehall

7:57 am on Friday, February 22, 2013

Love this idea! I remember my mom giving me $30 for my prom dress in 1984 and me searching Century III Mall for anything in that price range. I found one dress on clearance and bought it...as did two of my classmates...while the other girls had beautiful gowns from bridal shops and "up-doo"s from local salons. I felt horrible that night; embarrassed, I guess. My husband shares a similar story …   more ›

Editor's Notes

End of an Era in West Mifflin

The Carmike Maxi-Saver closed on Sunday night.

What will I do for popcorn now? The Century III area's Maxi-Saver 12 is no more. Well, the building is still there. But if you wanna watch a somewhat old (or just plain awful) movie for $1, you'll have to check out a Redbox. Even then, it's actually $1.20. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Carmike Cinemas-operated Maxi-Saver found on Mountain View Drive in West Mifflin Borough screened its last movies on Sunday night. Hitchcock, at 1 hour and 38 minutes of run time and a 9:55 p.m. start, was the last movie to show. Skyfall, at 2 hours and 23 minutes and starting at 9:45 p.m., was the last movie to end. The reason for the theater's closure is still unknown, but it sure seems permanent. A U-Haul truck was in its parking lot by …

Loews in Homestead is still $5 at least during the early hours. We have learned to skip the fatty snacks and just enjoy the movie.   more ›

Baldwin Grads Start 'ZomBiewEar' Clothing Company

Zombie-themed T-shirts are available now at Century III and Pittsburgh Mills New Dimension Comics stores.

To say that Ryan Eperthener and Brandon Becker, co-founders of the ZomBiewEar clothing company, are fans of zombie movies would probably be a safe assumption. After all, Becker convinced Eperthener to let him in on the business only after telling Eperthener exactly what to do in the event of a zombie apocalypse. The longtime friends, both Baldwin High School graduates and Baldwin-Whitehall residents, are now trying to dress for exactly such an occasion—and make sure that you're dressed for it, too. Their company's T-shirts, available in black and grey, consist of green lettering staggered across a bloody red background, and they are available now at two New Dimension Comics stores—the ones at Century III Mall in West Mifflin Borough and at…

Check Out This Century III Mall Nostalgia Website

Talk about a trip down Memory Lane, err ... Route 51.

Out of pure luck one day, I came across an incredible website, one of those sites that can suck you in for hours if you're not careful. As someone who grew up in Pittsburgh's South Hills area and went to high school at Baldwin, clicking through the images on this website was like a trip down Memory Lane. Well, more like Route 51. Without further ado, I introduce to you the "C3Nostalgia" group from Flickr, an online photo-sharing application. The full Web address is http://www.flickr.com/groups/c3nostalgia/. The group allows members to upload photos of how Century III Mall in West Mifflin Borough has looked and changed throughout the years. The best part is that you don't have to be a member of the group to click through the dozens and …

UPDATE: According to Eric Salmons, who runs the "C3Nostalgia" group, actually joining the group gives you access to more photos than are available publicly. "I am also in the process of scanning more photos to add to the group in the fall," Salmons says.   more ›

Baldwin High School's senior class President Elliot Rambo is asking for your help in "rocking" his class' prom. Anyone with a Facebook account can vote for Baldwin by visting the Century III Facebook page from now until April 28 and clicking on "Rock Your Prom." And if you don't have a Facebook account, you can create one for free by clicking here. There is no cost to enter, but only one vote is allowed per computer. Rambo is urging supporters to not only vote but also to spread the word to help Baldwin's Class of 2012 have an unforgettable prom. "I …

Baldwin-Whitehall/West Jefferson Hills Girl Scouts Donate Cookies to Soldiers

Operation Troop Appreciation accepted the scouts' cookies at Century III Mall on Saturday.

Girl Scouts from the Baldwin-Whitehall and West Jefferson Hills areas descended on Century III Mall in West Mifflin Borough on Saturday with several hundred boxes of cookies to be donated to U.S. military troops. Girls of all ranks—from Daisies to Brownies, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors—were at the event. Every year during girl scout cookie sales, scouts sell boxes under a Gift of Caring category, meaning that customers donate a purchased box to those scouts' cause. Each scout group decides, at the beginning of their sales, which organization(s) that the donated boxes will be given to, and many groups—like Baldwin-Whitehall's and West Jefferson Hills'—choose to donate cookies to active military members. Operation Troop Appreciation, an…
