Hearing for South Hills Village Bomb Scare Suspect Ends with Tears

The suspect allegedly told a Castle Shannon firefighter that he had bomb materials in his briefcase.

The elderly man accused of causing the evacuation of South Hills Village Mall last month was in tears apologizing to the judge and thanking Bethel Park police for treating him well at the end of his preliminary hearing on Monday. District Judge Robert Wyda continued the hearing for Frank Zahler until July 1 so that behavioral health specialists could help Zahler discover the underlying cause of why he made the "callous and stupid" remarks on April 21, just days after the Boston Marathon tragedy. "What you said was clearly wrong," Wyda told Zahler. "We need to get things mentally and emotionally under control. "You need to continue to work with these people (health specialists) to help you help yourself." Zahler was handcuffed in the middle…

Baldwin Twp. Officials Say More Fire Support Is Needed

And other notes from Tuesday night's township commissioners meeting, including a 2013 millage update.

Local Fire Crew in Need of More Support John Paravati used Tuesday night's Baldwin Township Board of Commissioners meeting to call for more support of the Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Department, which services Baldwin Township. "The money's down with fundraising," said Paravati, a township commissioner and also its fire company Chair. "The carnival isn't doing as much as it used to. Bingo is suffering from the casinos. Equipment costs are going up." Combined with all of that, Paravati said, the fire department just purchased a new ladder truck for approximately $1 million. "They were able to pay for (it), but they sold one of our older trucks." Paravati encouraged residents to not only consider joining the local fire crew but also to …

PHOTOS: Baldwin Township Light-Up Night

Christmas arrives on McNeilly Road.

Santa and Mrs. Claus made their way to Baldwin Township on Sunday night to light up the Christmas season, and township resident Robert Snyder was there to capture images from the event. The Clauses arrived at the ALDI parking lot at the intersection of McNeilly Road and Sussex Avenue at around 6 p.m. by way of a Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Department truck. (Castle Shannon's firefighters service Baldwin Township.) Residents from Baldwin and other surrounding communities gathered in the parking lot near a large township Christmas tree as goodie bags were handed out to children, who also posed for a picture on Santa's lap. The Baldwin Township Business and Professional Association organizes the annual light-up night. Snyder uploaded his …

Stray Cats Still Riling Residents in Baldwin Township

And other notes from Tuesday night's Board of Commissioners meeting.

'Why Can't They Just Get Euthanized?' A stray cats issue has dogged the Baldwin Township Board of Commissioners ever since a Donaldson Drive resident made controversial remarks at a township meeting in early June. Two months later, the issue remains just as topical, as evidenced by comments from Jean Colaizzi, of Highview Road, at another meeting on Tuesday night. Colaizzi asked the township's leaders on Tuesday to enact an ordinance prohibiting cats from being allowed to roam Baldwin without a leash. She said that cats found as such should be rounded up by animal control officers and killed. "Why can't they just get euthanized?" Colaizzi asked the board while suggesting that a trap-and-neuter program would not lessen the cat population …

No Decision Yet: Baldwin Cats Situation a Layered Issue

And other Baldwin Township notes from a July 3 commissioners meeting.

No Decision on Baldwin Cats The Baldwin Township Board of Commissioners discussed many items during a regular meeting on Tuesday night, but stray cats—a topic on the minds of many area residents—did not get a mention. Representatives of Animals Against The Odds (AATO) Rescue and Rehab attended the meeting with hopes that the commissioners would accept a plan sponsored by the AATO that allows for stray cats in Baldwin Township to be trapped, spayed or neutered, and then released. But the plan, known as trap-neuter-return, or TNR, did not make the meeting's agenda, and there were no public comments regarding the matter. The TNR program would involve volunteers placing feeding stations around the township to trap loose cats, and that aspect …

We walk our dogs through Baldwin Township. We have them on leashes and carry bags to pick up whatever they leave behind. I am very respectful of my people's property while walking my dogs. I walk early in the mornings most of the time and have noticed an increased number of cats around the Haverhill Road dead end area. There are at least 4 or 5 and sometimes you will see a new one here and there…   more ›

Baldwin Township Officials Raise Sewage Rate

And more notes from a March 6 board of commissioners meeting.

Sewage Rate Rises About $5 Per Month By a unanimous vote, the Baldwin Township Board of Commissioners decided on Tuesday night to raise the sewage rate in the township by $1 per every 1,000 gallons used—from $4.50 to $5.50. The reason for the increase, Commissioner Nick Pellegrino said, is to help fund pending repairs to be made to the McNeilly Road sewage system, though which Baldwin Township, Dormont Borough, Mt. Lebanon and Pittsburgh residents send sewage. Baldwin sewage accounts for the smallest part of the McNeilly system, Baldwin Township Manager Mary McGinley said, and thus, the township will be the least financially responsible for the repairs of the four municipalities. Nevertheless, the repairs will be costly enough that the …
