Man Charged with Drunkenly Setting Off Frisch's Burglar Alarm

And four other stories in these Whitehall police notes.

Man Sets Off Frisch's Alarm Police officers responded to a burglar alarm activated at Frisch's Restaurant in Whitehall Borough at around 3 a.m. on Sunday, Whitehall police Deputy Chief Richard M. Danko said. After investigating the incident at the popular Caste Village business, including interviewing a resident of nearby Grove Road, the officers learned that an individual had run from the restaurant area shortly after the alarm had gone off. Police tracked that individual down on nearby Weyman Road, Danko said, and identified him as Joseph Iannaccio, 28, of 332 Flowers Ave. in Pittsburgh's Hazelwood neighborhood, Danko said.  Iannaccio was in "a highly intoxicated condition," according to the deputy chief, and was taken into custody …

Giant Eagle Manager Nabs 'Gangster Squad' Thief, Police Say

The store's manager has helped to thwart theft four times since November.

Caste Village Giant Eagle Manager Phillip Scott did his best John O'Mara impression on May 1, helping to nab his fourth would-be thief since November 2012, according to Whitehall Borough police Deputy Chief Richard M. Danko. At around 12:19 p.m. that day, Whitehall police received a call from the store reporting the apprehension of a shoplifter, Danko said. Upon investigation, police learned that Carly Sarasnick, 33, of 636 Judith Dr. in Baldwin Borough, was stopped by Scott as she tried to leave the store without paying for three videodiscs in her possession, including—coincidentally enough—a copy of the 2013 movie Gangster Squad starring Sean Penn as notorious thief Mickey Cohen. Josh Brolin plays Sgt. O'Mara of the Los Angeles Police …

The one I spoke to works at the Bethel Park location, he's been there about 2 years now. I did not ask how much money he makes, as that's really none of my business, unless he had brought it up himself, which he did not in that conversation. As you and I both said, things could have changed, and there are other variables to consider.   more ›

‘Sincerely Yogurt’ Shop Coming to Caste Village

Mike and Kim Mathias, who also own Sincerely Yogurt in South Park, hope to open the store in mid-May.

Sincerely Yogurt in South Park was a frequent stop for Mike and Kim Mathias, as they passed it every time they drove their four children to and from soccer practice. It wasn’t a tough decision to stop there for a treat, Kim said, because she and her husband loved the product as much as their children did. Now, the couple owns the South Park store—and soon, they’ll open a Sincerely Yogurt in Caste Village, too. “We were just itching to do something like this,” Kim said. “We’re both from Brentwood, so we’ve always come to these shops. We go to these restaurants and these stores all the time, so it’s neat to be part of this.” The couple, who now lives in Bethel Park, plans to open the store in mid-May, no later than Memorial Day. The store is…

Transportation Survey a Step to Regain Public Transit in B-W Area

Whitehall Councilwoman Linda Book hopes residents living in and outside of Whitehall will take a transportation survey—attached here—to help regain better public transit through the area.

A Whitehall Borough councilwoman wants to make public transportation better for residents living within the borough—and for those living outside its borders. Councilwoman Linda Book created a transportation survey to gauge how residents in Whitehall and surrounding communities use public transportation, and how they’ve been affected by recent cuts and changes to bus routes. The survey is attached to this article as a PDF document. “I hope to collect data that can be helpful to potential transportation companies interested in providing services … if the Port Authority does not see fit to reinstate needed Whitehall bus routes once I provide data to them,” Book said in an email to Baldwin-Whitehall Patch. Book said she realizes that transit …

Yes, when they cut the 51B, Port Authority stated that the 51C Carrick would be the alternative. There is nowhere to park and it's at least a 30 minute walk each way (uphill..lol). I currently take the T from the Southbank station and there is no parking there either. I know several other people from Baldwin who drive to the Southbank station to park. Park at your own risk there, it's a parking …   more ›

Observing Passover in Baldwin-Whitehall: What You Need to Know

Here is a list of resources, events and services in honor of the Jewish observance.

It's almost time to break out the matzo. Passover arrives on March 25 this year, when Jews across the world will come together to retell the Exodus story over four cups of wine (or grape juice for those who can't indulge), and of course, a large, festive feast. Passover Traditions As the story goes, during their flight from slavery, the Jews did not have enough time for their dough to rise, resulting in a flaky cracker that is eaten instead of bread for a full week during Passover. The diet changes go beyond bread, however, and depend on family tradition. As a general rule, just look for the "Kosher for Passover" label, which, thankfully, spreads to more products year after year. Prior to the observance, Jews clean their homes and get rid …
