Group Gathers to Share Route 51 Bus Stop Dreams

Could the South Hills look more like South Side? Or better?

It's not that the bus stops along Route 51 in Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall aren't functional. They're just not very good. That is ... at least compared to what they could be. Five students from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture's Master of Urban Design program impressed an audience gathered at the Fairhaven United Methodist Church in Overbrook on Friday with their ideas for Route 51 bus stop improvements. The biggest improvements? These wouldn't just be bus stops anymore; they'd be high-tech, self-sustaining "platforms" complete with bike racks, water fountains and solar panels to power LED lights, real-time bus schedules and even vending machines and cellphone charging stations. And while the most practical idea …

TAKE SURVEY: CMU Students Look at Route 51 Bus Stops

Responses needed to hear concerns and preferences.

Students from Carnegie Mellon University's Master of Urban Design program are partnering with representatives of Economic Development South (EDS) this spring to improve bus stops on Route 51 and enhance the accessibility of neighborhoods along that corridor, according to an EDS news release. To get the project under way, the students have designed a short online survey to hear concerns and preferences from area residents and commuters. The survey (available here) is anonymous and takes about five minutes. EDS is a nonprofit community development corporation serving Brentwood, Whitehall and Baldwin boroughs and the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Carrick and Overbrook. EDS is committed to facilitating investment and reinvestment, creating jobs…

Linda you are so lucky not to have the port authority where you live. You are so much better off without them. I wish we could get rid of them in Carrick.....all they do is beg for tax payer money and government grants......raise prices(they are riduculous) and cut service to a bare minimum. The drivers are overweight lazy and so overpaid that it isn't even funny. I have been considering moving …   more ›

Unsolved Cases: Andrew Karis' Whereabouts Unknown

He's been missing from Pittsburgh since March 1993; though, he was reported in New York City and possibly San Francisco a few weeks after he disappeared.

Pittsburgh's Oakland area is teeming with young people on any given day as students from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh and Carlow University cross back and forth between traffic going to and from their classes. Andrew Karis was a student at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh in 1993 when he disappeared on a March day. Karis was last seen on March 1. Then, suddenly, he was missing from among those crowds of students. Also known by the nicknames Andy, Drew and Sparky, he was last seen on campus on March 1, that year. When he was reported missing, authorities tracked his credit card and telephone records and determined that he might have purchased a Greyhound bus ticket to New York City. Karis was 19 years old at the …

Paynter Elementary Student Is Regional 'Holiday Wish' Art Contest Winner

Emma Kraus' wish was chosen to appear on Edgar Snyder & Associates' 2012 holiday card.

Emma Kraus summed up her holiday wish with just one word—peace. And now, the 10-year-old from W.R. Paynter Elementary School in Baldwin Borough will share that wish with others on Edgar Snyder & Associates' 2012 holiday card. Emma is a winner in the 9th Annual Edgar Snyder & Associates "My Holiday Wish" Coloring Contest. Out of more than 700 entries, Emma's holiday artwork was chosen as one of just five works to appear on the law firm's holiday greeting, and she receives a $100 gift card. Emma's design features festive mistletoe and colorful ornaments hanging above the word "peace." Janet Cooley, Emma's art teacher at W.R. Paynter Elementary, surprised Emma with the news that she was a winner in the regional contest. "We took her to the …

Congrats to Emma on her artwork and her prize. Nice that there are so many holidays this time of year, seems like everyone is celebrating something. That one ornament on Emma's artwork does look like a dreidel, doesn't it? Maybe she was trying to incorporate more than just the Christian Christmas celebration in her PEACE! card. Would be nice if everyone could be at PEACE at least for the HOLIDAY …   more ›

Whitehall Officials Select Citizen of the Year

'Jason Coll Day' will be proclaimed on Aug. 25.

Saturday, Aug. 25, will not only be Community Day for Whitehall Borough; it will also be "Jason Coll Day." Coll—a composer, a musical director and a member of South Hills Area Against Dangerous Drilling (SHAADD)—has been chosen by Whitehall's elected officials as the borough's 18th annual Citizen of the Year. Coll will officially be crowned on Aug. 25 at Snyder Park at around 10 a.m., as Mayor James F. Nowalk and the Whitehall Council will proclaim that day "Jason Coll Day" in front of finishers and spectators of the borough's annual 5,000-meter race and 1-mile fun walk. Coll, a 1989 graduate of Baldwin High School and a 1993 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University's School of Drama, is the founder of Frog Prince Theatricals. He served as …

Obama Stumps on Health Care, Middle Class Roots at CMU

President Barack Obama greets hundreds of supporters at Carnegie Mellon, a stop on his Rustbelt campaign tour.

President Barack Obama urged a crowd at Carnegie Mellon University today to stay the course, despite newly released June jobs numbers showing sluggish employment growth across the nation.  "We knew we wouldn't be able to do it overnight, because these problems weren't created overnight," Obama told hundreds of supporters gathered near the university's College of Fine Arts during the sweltering July afternoon.  The U.S. Department of Labor reported today that employers created 80,000 new jobs during June, leveling the nation's unemployment rate at 8.2 percent. The report has dampened hopes that the economy was on the rebound after showing strong employment growth earlier this year.  Obama didn't directly reference the latest employment …

Leftovers from an April 11 B-W School Board meeting.

Principal Change at Whitehall In keeping with soon-to-be-Superintendent Dr. Randal A. Lutz's reorganization of Baldwin-Whitehall School District administration, the B-W School Board has moved Andrea Huffman from her position as the principal of Whitehall Elementary School to the position of director of curriculum for the entire district. The board approved Huffman's move during a Wednesday night meeting just before promoting Jennifer Marsteller from Whitehall Elementary vice principal to overall principal. The Huffman item passed, 8-0, with board member Diana Kazour being absent. Huffman will earn an annual salary of $92,501 in her new position, effective Thursday. The Marsteller item passed, 6-2, with board members Nancy Sciulli DiNardo …

The special 4/25 budget meeting is nice, but what’s not so nice is that the public will not be provided any information ahead of time. I specifically suggested to Mr. Schmotzer that the district provide a summary of key budget information on the website for public review prior to meeting so we can have questions ready, but the answer was no. He said he’s afraid any such information will be …   more ›

PA's U.S. House District 14 Candidate: Mike Doyle

Doyle—the Democratic incumbent—is being challenged by two others for his seat.

Three people will run in an April 24 primary election for two spots on November's general ballot for the U.S. House of Representatives' 14th District of Pennsylvania, which includes Baldwin Township and Baldwin Borough. Incumbent Mike Doyle, from Forest Hills Borough, will face off against Janis Brooks, a North Versailles Township resident, in April's primary for the Democratic Party nomination. Republican Hans Lessmann, of Forest Hills, is the only candidate from his party running for that seat, meaning that either Doyle or Brooks will almost certainly face Lessmann in November. Below are details from a Patch interview with Doyle. Here is an interview with Brooks. An interview with Lessmann will appear later. Short Biography: Doyle has a …

New Leland Point Owners Aiming to Change Public Perception

Residents in more than 200 units have been removed so far, and renovations are under way.

A Changing of the Guard If crime is not curtailed at Leland Point, it certainly won’t be from a lack of trying. The approximately 1,100-unit apartment complex in south Baldwin Borough—sharing its name with nearby Leland Park—changed ownership in June 2011, and there’s a new sheriff in town.  No, the Baldwin police haven’t stopped monitoring the place—there’s still a police substation at Leland Point—but District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. announced in June 2011 that his office is no longer overseeing the property. Zappala charged Leland Point’s former owners—Leland Point Holdings LLC—with one count of public nuisance in June 2010. “The people that were living there (at Leland Point) were treated very badly,” Zappala said in June 2011…
