Baldwin Boys Will Miss Playoffs; Two Section Games Still to Play

Head Coach Joe Urmann sees work to be done this coming offseason.

A 3-1 run in mid-January won't be enough to get Baldwin High School's boys basketball team into the 2013 WPIAL playoffs, thanks to the eight straight losses that preceded it and the three more that followed it. Though Baldwin (7-13 overall) beat Trinity High School, 54-43, on Friday to improve to 3-9 in WPIAL AAAA's Section 4, the Highlanders have dropped from postseason contention. With two section games still to play this season, the best that Baldwin can do is finish with five section wins. Canon-McMillan and Peters Township high schools—both of which already have five wins in Section 4—still have to play each other once more this regular season, meaning that at least one of them will finish with at least six wins. And six wins is what …

Basketball: Baldwin, Upper St. Clair Battle for Final Playoffs Spot

Senior-less Baldwin controls its own destiny.

It's simple, really: Win, and they're in. That's the formula for the Baldwin High School girls basketball team, which has two section games left this season to earn a spot in the 2013 WPIAL playoffs. Should the Highlanders win both games, they're in the show—no matter what. But maybe that won't be so easy, especially when Baldwin's final two section opponents of the regular season—Mt. Lebanon (18-2 overall) and Bethel Park (17-2 overall) high schools—have a combined 35-4 record. But rest easy, Baldwin fans. The Highlanders could lose one or even both of those games and still make it to the postseason. After Baldwin's 66-44 win over Peters Township High School on Thursday night, Baldwin and Upper St. Clair high schools sit tied for the …

Some good news: Upper St. Clair lost tonight to Mt. Lebanon, 64-47, meaning that, if Baldwin wins tomorrow night at home against Bethel Park, it's in the playoffs. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch will be there!   more ›

RECAP/STATS: Highlanders Smack Macs, 31-7

Canon-McMillan will not make the 2012 playoffs; Baldwin is still in the hunt.

To add your own pictures from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. Don't hesitate to include photos of the marching band, cheerleaders, coaches and fans! Full statistics (including play-by-play) are available in the media gallery above. Looking very much like the quarterback whom his head coach says that he is, Baldwin High School sophomore Doug Altavilla threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns to lead his team to a 31-7 win over Canon-McMillan High School in a WPIAL AAAA Southeastern Conference football game on Friday night. In the first half alone, Altavilla completed eight of nine passes for 240 yards and both TDs. He finished the game going 9-for-13 against the host Big Macs (1-7 overall, 1-6 Southeastern), even though …

Friday Night's Football Game Starts at 7:30 (Plus Season Stats)

The Baldwin game at Canon-Mac was originally publicized as starting a half-hour earlier.

Baldwin High School will play at Canon-McMillan High School in a WPIAL AAAA Southeastern Conference football game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Previous Patch stories showed the game as starting a half-hour earlier. We regret the error. Baldwin High (2-5 overall, 1-5 Southeastern) will almost certainly have to win its final two games of the regular season to have a shot at a WPIAL playoffs berth. Canon-McMillan High (1-6, 1-5) is in the same predicament. Again, the game starts at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. If you're going, here are directions to Canon-Mac Stadium. Note that parking is limited, and most fans park on side streets. Included in this article's media gallery—click on the PDF located toward the right side of this page (below the photo)—are…

RECAP/STATS: Highlanders Escape Fox Chapel with 27-20 Win

Baldwin snaps four-game losing streak with road victory.

To add your own pictures from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. Don't hesitate to include photos of the marching band, cheerleaders, coaches and fans! Full statistics (including play-by-play) are available in the media gallery above. The Fox Chapel Area High School football team doesn't throw the ball much. Turns out, there's a reason for that. The Foxes threw six passes during Friday night's non-conference game against visiting Baldwin High School, and only one was caught ... by a Baldwin player. The Highlanders' sophomore linebacker Donald West stepped in front of a short pass from junior quarterback Brandon Mitchell early in the third quarter, intercepted it and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown to give Baldwin …

STATS/RECAP: Wolverines Spoil Baldwin Homecoming, 35-7

Woodland Hills outgains Baldwin, 321-132.

To add your own pictures from the game, click on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. Don't hesitate to include photos of the marching band, cheerleaders, coaches and fans! Full statistics (including play-by-play) are available in the media gallery above. Baldwin High School's student body honored two of its stars on Friday night, crowning them at halftime as the school's Homecoming king and queen. But it was Woodland Hills High School's football team that stole the show, dominating Baldwin High and spoiling the Highlanders' Homecoming night with a 35-7 defeat. Woodland Hills outgained Baldwin, 321-132, and led, 28-0, at halftime before holding on for a WPIAL AAAA Southeastern Conference victory that upped its record to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in…

Sound Off

SCHEDULE: How Many Wins for Baldwin Football This Season?

The Highlanders have improved every year under Coach Jim Wehner, but this appears to be Wehner's most challenging season.

(Scroll down to check out the schedule.) Baldwin High School's varsity football team opens its 2012 season with a Southeastern Conference game this Friday night at Peters Township High School at 7:30. Baldwin will be competing in one of western Pennsylvania high school football's toughest conferences this year, as the Southeastern includes many contenders for the WPIAL's AAAA (highest level) championship, including perennial powers Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon and Woodland Hills high schools. Baldwin finished 2011 with a 4-5 overall record, including a 1-4 mark in AAAA's defunct Great Southern Conference, which basically added Woodland Hills, Penn Hills and Plum high schools to the renamed conference this year. The Great Southern's …

WATCH: Highlanders Football Opens Summer Training Camp

A Thursday night TV game is scheduled for Sept. 13 at Penn Hills.

Baldwin High School's varsity football team began official on-field preparations for its 2012 season on Monday with a two-session day of summer camp at Baldwin High Stadium. Baldwin finished 2011 with a 4-5 overall record, including a 1-4 mark in the Great Southern Conference, a WPIAL AAAA (highest level) conference. The Highlanders did not qualify for the postseason last year, their downfall marked by three straight conference losses from Sept. 30 to Oct. 14. But the team has come a long way since going a dreadful 0-9 in 2008. In fact, in each of Head Coach Jim Wehner's three seasons at the helm, Baldwin has improved its wins total and winning percentage, going 2-8 in 2009 and 3-6 in 2010. Wehner believes that another increase will mean a…

UPDATE: Baldwin Boys Have One Last Shot at WPIAL Playoffs This Season

The Highlanders need a win and losses by USC and Peters.

UPDATE: Peters Township won on Friday night, eliminating Baldwin from postseason contention. Baldwin finished in fifth place, one game out of the playoffs. Without a couple of upsets, it will be a close-but-no-cigar scenario for the Baldwin High School varsity boys basketball team this season, which needs a win on Friday night and losses by two other teams to qualify for the 2012 WPIAL playoffs. Baldwin's section record this season heading into Friday night's game at home against Bethel Park High School is 5-8, tied for fifth place with Upper St. Clair High School. Peters Township High School, with a 6-7 record in Section 4, is alone in fourth place, and every Section 4 team has just one section game left this season. Although Peters has …

Baldwin Girls Outlast Upper St. Clair, 54-52

Highlanders win in overtime behind 17 points, 14 rebounds from Anna Lauterbach.

Basketball is about size and speed, otherwise known as Anna Lauterbach and Taylor Wentzel, respectively. Lauterbach scored a team-high 17 points—most from within a few feet of the basket—and Wentzel added a darting-and-diving 10 to lead Baldwin High School to a 54-52 overtime win against visiting Upper St. Clair High School in varsity section play on Monday night. It was a win that Lauterbach, a 6-foot-2 senior forward/center, had to enjoy from the bench for the last 1 minute, 38 seconds of overtime, as a physical game eventually led to her fouling out. She still managed to pull down an impressive 14 rebounds before watching Wentzel, a 5-foot-6 senior point guard, sink two free throws with 17 seconds left for the game's final lead. "She's …
