WATCH: Brave Souls Take the 'Plunge' for Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall

Volunteers raise funds for area development by jumping into the Mon' River as part of the annual Pittsburgh Polar Plunge.

Hundreds of Pittsburghers successively broke the world's 3-meter doggypaddle record on New Year's Day after braving 36-degree temperatures to jump into the Monongahela River. And nearly 30 of those record-breakers were community leaders and volunteers from Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall boroughs. The Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall folks, headed by John F. Slater—owner of the John F. Slater Funeral Home in Brentwood and the board chair of Economic Development South—accepted sponsorships of varying amounts to make good on their promise of arctic swimming. All told, over $4,000 were raised to be split between Economic Development South (EDS), the Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, the Brentwood Business Owners Association and the…

Support/Participate in Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall's Polar Plunge

Take part in a great cause on New Year's Day.

If you can think of a better way to support development projects in Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall boroughs, please let us know. But for now, we're jumping into the Mon'. Baldwin-Whitehall Patch Editor Bob Healy—that's me—will join the crazy folks from the Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, the Brentwood Business Owners Association, Economic Development South and the Brentwood Park Initiative in a New Year's Day Polar Plunge into the Monongahela River. Participants—open to all people—will try to raise funds by obtaining sponsors for their 9:30 a.m. plunges that day. The participants will meet at their launching pad—the Monongahela River Parking Wharf, or "Mon Wharf"—to bask in the warmth of their community before basking in…

Economic Development South Welcomes Carrick, Overbrook

Those Pittsburgh neighborhoods join Baldwin, Whitehall and Brentwood boroughs as part of an effort to improve the area's business climate.

Economic Development South (EDS), the nonprofit organization headquartered in Brentwood Borough, has added the neighborhoods of Carrick and Overbrook to its growing list of municipalities that have partnered in order to foster a competitive and healthy business environment in a large chunk of Pittsburgh's South Hills area. Carrick and Overbrook—officially part of Pittsburgh—join Baldwin, Whitehall and Brentwood boroughs—three municipalities that border the city—as EDS members. Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall also belong to the Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, but EDS has a purpose that extends beyond that affiliation. As Baldwin-Whitehall Patch contributor Emily Leone reported in March 2011, EDS fills a role that, up until…

VIDEO: Rich Fitzgerald Speaks at B-B-W Luncheon in Baldwin Borough

Newly sworn-in Allegheny County executive talks about county assessments, shale drilling and public transit.

"If we do this reassessment, it's going to draw the market away," said newly sworn-in Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald at a Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Thee Olde Place Inn along Streets Run Road on Thursday. Appearing as the most recent of the B-B-W Chamber of Commerce's monthly guest speakers, Fitzgerald spoke freely and on his own topics at the luncheon. He chose to focus on three areas: property assessments, Marcellus and Utica Shale drilling, and public transit. Fitzgerald reaffirmed his position on property reassessments in Allegheny County—that Allegheny is being singled out in Pennsylvania and that he will fight to halt the reassessment process. Fitzgerald called property tax "the worst kind…
