The work of more than 13,000 volunteers from neighborhoods, schools, businesses and organizations have made it possible for communities in 20 counties to enjoy 135 gardens.
While driving in the region, have you noticed the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's community gardens? These gardens, which are planted by volunteers each spring, including the ones near Baldwin-Whitehall, have helped to beautify the region. According to the conservancy's website, corporate and organizational sponsorships and the work of more than 13,000 volunteers from neighborhoods, schools, businesses and other organizations have made it possible for communities in 20 counties to enjoy 135 gardens. Volunteers are needed to help with this spring's community flower garden planting. Groups, families and individuals interested in helping to plant neighborhood gardens should contact Lynn McGuire-Olzak at 412-586-2324 or at lolzak@paconserve…

The event, now in its second year, raised more than $53,000 in 2012.
It'll once again be a great day for hockey when residents from around Pittsburgh convene in Brentwood Borough on Saturday, March 9, for the second annual "Drop the Puck on Cancer" fundraising event that will benefit a number of South Hills families. "Drop the Puck" raised more than $53,000 this past year for the Duttine family, of Whitehall Borough, and the efforts of the late Tom Cavataio, of Brentwood. Julie Andrulonis Duttine, who grew up in Brentwood, died from cancer in December 2011, the same month that Tom Cavataio, a hockey enthusiast largely responsible for developing street hockey in Brentwood, also died from the disease. This year, proceeds from the event will also be shared with the families of four more Brentwood natives who …

Brentwood Borough's 10th Annual Light-Up Night will cause the closure of Brownsville Road between Route 51 and Towne Square Way from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The Route 51-Brownsville intersection is on the border of Whitehall and Brentwood boroughs. The event will start at 5 p.m. with holiday music, and light-up ceremonies begin at around 5:45, followed by a parade featuring Santa and Mrs. Claus in a horse-drawn sleigh. We will reveal the answer on Monday.
The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch has partnered with the Baldwin Historical Society to bring you a weekly trivia question that delves into our area's colorful past. Pat Lombardi and Patty Woehler, co-presidents of the society, generously write the questions and provide the pictures. Here is this week's question: In its first year of competition, the Baldwin High School football team—with its purple and white uniforms—played to two victories, four defeats and one tie. The in-game picture seen above is of a scrimmage with nearby Brentwood High School. Baldwin High's squad was under the direction of Head Coach Jack Schricker in its first season. Schricker was assisted by Francis Eureka and Faculty Manager Ernest Harmon. Which year was this? Read …

Tiny Brentwood has a grand tradition.
Tiny Brentwood Borough will see a population boom for at least two days next week, as guests and residents from in and around Pittsburgh's South Hills area will descend on the community of about 9,000 residents for an Independence Day celebration. The festivities—put together annually by Brentwood community leaders and volunteers—have grown into a can't-miss attraction for many Pittsburghers, and John Frombach, chair of the Brentwood 4th of July Committee, says that 2012 will be no different. Frombach says that the borough's Fourth of July parade alone (along Brownsville Road) draws more than 40,000 spectators each year from all over the South Hills. Here is this year's schedule: TUESDAY, JULY 3 6-8 p.m.: BRENTWOOD STREET FAIR (Along …

Daylong event brings out the best in Brentwood and the rest of the South Hills.
UPDATE (Monday, Feb. 27, at 4:51 p.m.): The total money raised by this event has now exceeded $53,000, and donations are still being accepted. Saturday at Brentwood Park may have been centered around hockey, but the day was never about hockey. For the families of the late Tom Cavataio, of Brentwood Borough, and Julie (Andrulonis) Duttine, of nearby Whitehall Borough, things like hockey stopped being important too long ago. Both Tom and Julie—Brentwood High School alumni—died from cancer in December, leaving a hole in the lives of their families and friends. But events like Saturday's "Drop the Puck on Cancer" aimed to fill at least part of that hole. Friends, relatives, neighbors, classmates and even total strangers descended on Brentwood …
