Could the South Hills look more like South Side? Or better?
It's not that the bus stops along Route 51 in Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall aren't functional. They're just not very good. That is ... at least compared to what they could be. Five students from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture's Master of Urban Design program impressed an audience gathered at the Fairhaven United Methodist Church in Overbrook on Friday with their ideas for Route 51 bus stop improvements. UPDATE: This work has been extended for Monday, April 29, to Friday, May 3, at least. Crews from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11-0 will cause temporary lane closures and restrictions on Route 51 from at least Dec. 10 to 14, 2012, due to pothole patching. The work will occur in various locations across the busy state road—specifically, from its Brownsville Road intersection on the border of Whitehall and Brentwood boroughs to its Route 88 intersection in Pittsburgh's Overbrook neighborhood. That is an approximately 1.7-mile stretch. Motorists are advised to use caution, slow down and expect changing traffic patterns when traveling through the work area. The work of more than 13,000 volunteers from neighborhoods, schools, businesses and organizations have made it possible for communities in 20 counties to enjoy 135 gardens.
While driving in the region, have you noticed the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's community gardens? These gardens, which are planted by volunteers each spring, including the ones near Baldwin-Whitehall, have helped to beautify the region. According to the conservancy's website, corporate and organizational sponsorships and the work of more than 13,000 volunteers from neighborhoods, schools, businesses and other organizations have made it possible for communities in 20 counties to enjoy 135 gardens. Volunteers are needed to help with this spring's community flower garden planting. Although Earth Day is officially April 22, it's not too early for residents of Baldwin and Whitehall boroughs and Baldwin Township to begin to look at ways to be more environmentally friendly. The following is a list of items, provided in part by the Allegheny County Health Department, that should not be in landfills and generally aren't collected through municipal recycling. William Scherz, 73, was a bus driver for the Baldwin-Whitehall School District.
Charges against William Scherz, 73, of Brentwood, were held for court on Monday. Scherz was a Baldwin-Whitehall School District bus driver when he was accused in February of driving to Elizabeth Township to have sex with a 15-year-old boy. Scherz faces charges of corruption of minors, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and statutory sexual assault, among others. His formal arraignment at the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas is scheduled for May 9 at 1 p.m., according to an online court document. B-W School District Superintendent Dr. Randal A. Lutz said that Scherz is on unpaid leave from the district pending the outcome of the legal process. Scherz has not been disciplined by the district, Lutz said. For more details about this …

Former Baldwin High School choir members will have one last chance to sing for the late Dr. Regis V. Shalley. Dr. Shalley, who died on March 6 at the age of 88, will have a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Baldwin Borough at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, and choir alumni are invited to attend and sing in honor of Shalley at the conclusion of the Mass. Shalley was the choral director at Baldwin High from 1954 to 1981. Friends are being received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home in Brentwood Borough on Tuesday, March 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, March 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral prayer will also be held at Slater's on Thursday morning at 10:15.
