Friends and neighbors from across Baldwin Borough and its surrounding municipalities descended on Churchview Avenue and the Baldwin Borough Municipal Complex on Saturday for the 2012 version of Baldwin Community Day. The daylong event—booths opened at 7 a.m., and fireworks went off at around 10 p.m.—featured the annual Baldwin Mile race, community parade down Churchview, free swimming at the Baldwin Borough Swimming Pool, food, amusement rides and a horde of other activities and performances to allow a large part of Pittsburgh's South Hills area to display some civic pride. cc, I'm sorry that this happened to you and your family. There are people out there that don't care about anyone but themselves. People shouldn't park in handicap spots unless they have a handicap tag or plaque. I wish they would of towed the cars for your sake so you and your family could of enjoyed the day.   more ›

Injured Policeman Jim Kuzak Supported by 'Brothers' at Boxing Show on Saturday

Kuzak has roots in Whitehall Borough.

Police work is a brotherhood. When one man goes down, each brother feels it, too. Such is the case with Officer Jim Kuzak of the Clairton Police Department. Kuzak was shot multiple times in the line of duty on April 4 and was paralyzed by the attack. Ever since, his brothers (and sisters) have seen to it that Kuzak and his family have not been left any worse. Pittsburgh’s unofficial brotherhood of police officers have organized a number of fundraisers in Kuzak’s honor, including Saturday night when the Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League held a Guns ’n Hoses boxing event at the Pittsburgh Expo Mart in Monroeville. All proceeds from the fighting fundraiser benefited Kuzak and his family directly, as well as the Give Kids the World …

Baldwin High's Conway Boys Compete at State Boxing Championships

The Purple and White go 1-1 at the Royal Place Restaurant.

Sometimes, less is more. Just ask Mike Conway. Conway, 16 and a Baldwin High School junior, fell out of the Pennsylvania State Golden Gloves boxing championships when he lost a 145-pound cadet-class bout on April 9. On May 7, he found himself in the finals of that same tournament. Huh? You see; Conway, who was lugging 195 pounds around in November, last year, has dropped all the way down to 136 pounds. And as luck would have it, the state tournament needed a Pittsburgh representative at the 138-pound level on Saturday. In stepped Conway, also a wrestler at Baldwin High, for a second chance. His luck ran out, though, as he drew a 6-foot-1 fighter from the Philadelphia area in the state final. Kieran Hooks, a Lawncrest Boxing Club …

Golden Gloves Update: Conway Wins on Friday, Bradley Loses on Saturday

Baldwin High School sophomore Matt Conway captures a Western Pennsylvania boxing title at the cadet level, while Baldwin alum Scott Bradley '08 falls in an open-class state-title bout.

Perhaps Baldwin-Whitehall was just being greedy. Two titles in one weekend, after all, could have been seen as just too much. Still, Baldwin Township resident and Baldwin High School sophomore Matt Conway, already a 2011 state Silver Gloves champion, captured another title on Friday when he earned a 2011 Western Pennsylvania Golden Gloves championship. Conway, who will now compete for a state Golden Gloves title at the Royal Place Restaurant on Route 88 on Saturday, May 7, earned a Western Pa. title in that tournament when he out-dueled Caleb Parrish of the West Allegheny Fighting Academy for a judges' decision at the very same location this past Friday. Conway and Parrish were competing in the 125-pound cadet-class section of this year'…

BHS Alum, Student Both Win Golden Gloves Boxing Matches Saturday Night

Scott Bradley '08 earns a 2011 Western Pennsylvania championship and the evening's outstanding boxer award.

Boxing is not a sponsored sport at Baldwin High School. Too bad, because the Highlanders would have had themselves some tough teams over the years. The Western Pennsylvania Golden Gloves boxing championships came to Saddle Ridge in Station Square on Saturday night, and two BHS students – one a recent alumnus and the other a sophomore – came away with three-round decisions. Scott Bradley, a 2008 Baldwin graduate, earned top honors Saturday night by claiming the evening's outstanding fighter award. Golden Gloves officials bestowed that honor on Bradley as the last order of the night, but the basis for the honor came from Bradley's earlier victory that evening when he out-dueled Larry Blakely of the 3rd Avenue Boxing Gym for a three-round …

Baldwin High's Conway, Harrison's Cusick Fall at Silver Gloves Regionals

Both fighters lose close three-round decisions.

Baldwin High School sophomore Matt Conway and J.E. Harrison Middle School eighth-grader Shawn Cusick both fell out of the regional section of the National Silver Gloves Boxing tournament yesterday in Terre Haute, Ind. Matt, 15 and fighting in the 119-pound class, and Shawn, 14 and competing in the 106-pound section, both lost close three-round decisions. Matt's rounds were scheduled for two minutes, while Shawn's were set for one-and-a-half-minutes. Matt competed against a right-handed fighter from the Toledo, Ohio, area – Raymond Castaneda – and Shawn fought a southpaw from Detroit – Aarkeyse Higdon. The Silver Gloves tournament is open to those ages 15 and under, so Matt, a back-to-back Silver Gloves state champion, cannot compete in the…

B-W Students Earn State Boxing Titles

Baldwin High’s Matt Conway and J.E. Harrison’s Shawn Cusick advance to regional section of National Silver Gloves tournament.

These aren't your typical eighth- and 10th-grade athletes. No, there are no school colors here. No varsity letters either, and no cheerleaders. In fact, Baldwin Township's Matt Conway and Baldwin Borough's Shawn Cusick don't even practice on their school district's grounds. Yet, both recently brought state championships back to the home of the Highlanders with 119- and 106-pound Silver Gloves boxing titles, respectively. Matt, the 119-pound 10th-grader at Baldwin High School who trains alongside Shawn at South Park Boxing Club, is competing for the last time in the ages 15-and-under National Silver Gloves Boxing tournament. This year, he plans to "win it all," meaning a national title, something that eluded him the year before. Matt lost …
