The suspect allegedly told a Castle Shannon firefighter that he had bomb materials in his briefcase.
The elderly man accused of causing the evacuation of South Hills Village Mall last month was in tears apologizing to the judge and thanking Bethel Park police for treating him well at the end of his preliminary hearing on Monday. District Judge Robert Wyda continued the hearing for Frank Zahler until July 1 so that behavioral health specialists could help Zahler discover the underlying cause of why he made the "callous and stupid" remarks on April 21, just days after the Boston Marathon tragedy. "What you said was clearly wrong," Wyda told Zahler. "We need to get things mentally and emotionally under control. "You need to continue to work with these people (health specialists) to help you help yourself." Zahler was handcuffed in the middle…

Bethel Park police charged Frank Zahler, 70, with three felonies on Sunday.
Bethel Park police have charged a Castle Shannon Borough man with making terroristic threats, threatening to use a weapon of mass destruction and causing or risking a catastrophe following a bomb threat at South Hills Village Mall on Sunday. All of the charges against Frank Zahler, 70, are felonies. Zahler, who is accused of making a bomb threat at Barnes & Noble Booksellers at South Hills Village on Sunday night, blames his arrest on "hoity, toity kids," according to The Associated Press. Police say that Zahler asked some other customers at Barnes & Noble to watch his briefcase and joked that it contained some explosives relating to the Boston Marathon. The customers alerted the store's manager, who then called police. Police evacuated …

A witness tells Patch that he saw a man get taken into custody at Red Robin.
Bethel Park police evacuated South Hills Village Mall, Carmike 10 cinemas and surrounding restaurants at around 6:30 on Sunday night after a man claimed that he had bomb-making material in his briefcase. South Hills Village officials released the following statement at 10:30 p.m. Sunday: The local authorities have confirmed that there is no longer a threat, and the mall is now safe for our customers, tenants and employees. We will re-open for business tomorrow at 10 a.m., regular business hours. A man went into Barnes & Noble Booksellers at around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday and said that he had bomb-making material in the case. Murphy was detained by police on Blossom Drive on Friday.
Officers from multiple police departments detained William Joseph Murphy III at a Blossom Drive home on Friday as part of a burglary investigation in the south Baldwin Borough area, according to Baldwin police Chief Michael Scott. Upon questioning, Allegheny County police brought charges against Murphy of one count each of burglary, criminal trespassing and the illegal sale or transfer of firearms, and two counts of receiving stolen property, according to an online court document. Murphy turns 28 on Monday. Police entered 620 Blossom after Murphy's mother, the homeowner, granted permission to do so. Eyewitness accounts show at least the Baldwin Borough, Bethel Park, Pleasant Hills, Brentwood Borough and Whitehall police departments on …

Police Chief Scott warns against unlocked windows and doors.
Multiple residents of the 600 block of Blossom Drive in south Baldwin Borough have, in the past month, reported being victims of home burglaries, Baldwin police Chief Michael Scott confirmed on Monday. Neighbors have informed the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch of the burglaries and are warning fellow residents of south Baldwin and nearby Bethel Park to lock their windows and doors. Scott expressed the same warning and said that Baldwin police have identified a person of interest in their investigation of the burglaries—an adult male. That person of interest lives in an unvictimized home in the same block of Blossom. Police were able to track footprints from one of the victimized homes to the person of interest's home, Scott said, but the victims …

Arrest happened on Nov. 19 along Streets Run Road.
A SWAT team was ready, but it turns out that it wasn't necessary to bring down a heroin dealer in Whitehall Borough in mid-November, Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. Police arrested Joshua Gunter, 24, of 455 Streets Run Rd. in Whitehall, on Nov. 19 after Dolfi said that a confidential informant engaged in a "drug-buy" with Gunter at Gunter's residence that afternoon. Dolfi said that police officers from the nearby Baldwin Borough, Bethel Park and Mt. Lebanon police departments, as well as a Castle Shannon K-9 unit, joined Whitehall police on Nov. 19. Groups from those and other municipalities helped to form a South Hills Area Council of Governments SWAT team prior to the arrest that day, but Dolfi said that the SWAT team was …

A man is charged again with doing something for the second time in just over a year.
A man with a history of stealing from the Giant Eagle in Whitehall Borough's Caste Village is charged with doing the same thing again after he led police from Whitehall and Castle Shannon boroughs, and Bethel Park, on a search for him through Whitehall on Saturday. Brenton Fawcett, 37, of 353 Brookline Blvd., was arrested that day and taken to the Allegheny County Jail on charges of robbery, receiving stolen property, retail theft and defiant trespass for stealing DVDs and other merchandise from Giant Eagle at around 1:03 p.m., Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. (UPDATE: The robbery charge was withdrawn on Nov. 13.) Dolfi explained that the trespass charge stems from a restriction placed on Fawcett from entering that Giant Eagle …

Did this woman come to your door? And another item in these Whitehall Borough police notes.
A Pattern of Fraud Something seemed strange when Amanda Krull came to a home in the 700 block of Whitehall Borough's Dunn Drive on Wednesday night. As it turned out, something was. Krull, 22, of 59 Pearl Dr. in neighboring Brentwood Borough, visited the home at around 6:30 that night to ask for donations for an epilepsy research fundraising walk in Washington, DC, from May 1-3. A woman from nearby Greenlee Road, who was at her father's Dunn Drive home at the time, spoke to Krull and gave her $20, but when the daughter did some research the next morning about the 2012 National Walk for Epilepsy—which was actually completed in March—she called the Whitehall Police Department to report the fraud. Krull was soon after arrested by constables …
