The Baldwin alumna has started all 20 games for the first-place Dukes.
Whitehall Borough's Belma Nurkic, a Baldwin High School product, is used to winning. The 5-foot-8 guard helped and often led the Baldwin girls basketball team to three WPIAL playoffs appearances in her four high school seasons, including two appearances in the state playoffs and a WPIAL runner-up campaign. Figures then that Nurkic has been a great fit at Duquesne University, where the now-sophomore has been big a part of the 2012-13 Dukes' 17-3 overall record, including a 6-0 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference, good for a first-place tie. A season ago, Nurkic, on a basketball scholarship at Duquesne, saw action in every game for the Dukes—averaging 3.4 points—and helped them to a 20-12 mark and a berth in the Women's National Invitation …

There'll be plenty of challenges for Baldwin, but the team seems ready to adapt.
"Speed and defense." If Head Coach Gavin Prosser has been trying to drive something into the brains of his players this preseason, he's certainly getting that done. When asked to identify what might be the calling card of the 2012-13 Baldwin High School girls varsity basketball team, Prosser mentioned "speed and defense," and that was after two of his players answered the same question with the same three words. The Baldwin High girls have added a promising 6-foot freshman center—Carly Lutz—to their young roster this season, but the team will mostly have to rely on smaller players, most of whom have less scoring pedigree than three of the squad's leaders from a season ago. Call it destiny. Well, maybe a curse. Baldwin High School, which has appeared in the girls state (PIAA) basketball playoffs in three out of the past four years—and won at least one state playoffs game every time—have always drawn Mt. Lebanon High School later in the bracket. And each time, Mt. Lebanon—the three-time defending state champion—has ended Baldwin's season. Such was the case again on Tuesday night in the second round of the PIAA tournament at Duquesne University's A.J. Palumbo Center, where the Blue Devils, WPIAL champions in three out of the past four years, improved to 25-3 for the season with a 45-32 win over Baldwin. Prosser, a 2003 Baldwin High School alum, is in his first season as a high school coach.
The Baldwin High School varsity girls basketball team has compiled an average record of 18-7 over the past four seasons, including three consecutive WPIAL playoffs appearances, a WPIAL championship game berth and two trips to the PIAA playoffs. But the team's newest head coach, Baldwin High alum Gavin Prosser '03, has a career head coaching record of 0-0. As with the boys team at Baldwin, the Highlanders girls will play under a new head coach during the 2011-12 season, a coach that is leading a varsity basketball team for the first time. Duquesne University's men's and women's teams met fans on Saturday afternoon and spread the word about an exciting brand of basketball coming this winter.
The Duquesne University basketball teams both hope to reach new heights this season, no pun intended. The women's program, joined this year by freshman guard and 2011 Baldwin High School graduate Belma Nurkic, is primed and ready to take a big step forward. "We are highly motivated and excited to make the NCAA Tournament," said senior guard Alex Gensler, formerly of Upper St. Clair High School. The Dukes women felt snubbed last season by reaching only the NIT Tournament and have set lofty goals for this coming 2011-12 campaign.
