THEN AND NOW: Highlanders Sing 'The Hundred Pipers' for Dr. Shalley

Shalley, Baldwin High's former choral director, died on March 6.

Former Baldwin High School singers said goodbye to longtime choral director Dr. Regis V. Shalley last month the best way that they could, belting out a rendition of "The Hundred Pipers" during Dr. Shalley's funeral Mass at Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Baldwin Borough. The alumni gathered to sing at the conclusion of the Mass for Shalley, who was Baldwin High's choral director from 1954 to 1981 and died on March 6 at the age of 88. Current Baldwin choral director Kris Tranter oversaw the alumni performance. Along with "The Hundred Pipers"—fitting given Baldwin's mascot, the Highlander—the alumni performed "The Lord Bless You and Keep You," as well. ("The Hundred Pipers" is also known as "Wi' a Hundred Pipers/Annie …

April's Greatest Person: Connor Doran

Talented junior's star shines brightly year-round.

Sure, part of the reason that no one could take their eyes off of Connor Doran during Baldwin High School's production of "Curtains" last month was because he was playing the lead role. And yes, it's hard not to notice Doran while he's performing with the school's Baldwinaires choir since he's the only one behind the piano. But Connor is showcased these ways for a reason: He's mighty talented. Doran, a junior at Baldwin, hasn't wasted a moment of his high school years. And for those who have seen his impressive performances, they haven't wasted their time, either. The 16-year-old resident of south Baldwin Borough's Olympic Drive plays chromatic percussion (xylophone, et al.) for the Baldwin High marching band every fall, spends his winters…

Quote from Kris Tranter added.: "He's quite exceptional," Tranter said, "and I would have to say 'rare.' This is my 13th year teaching, and I've never seen a student with that kind of talent before—well-rounded talent, too. He's a great singer. He's a great actor. When you talk about his piano-playing abilities, you can't even explain it. He is just that good."   more ›

WATCH: Baldwin-Whitehall's Promotional DVD Impresses Area Realtors

Agents were invited to a screening of the video and were encouraged to share it with prospective homebuyers.

**WATCH THE VIDEO HERE: bwschools.net/bwsdpromovideo  ... The Baldwin-Whitehall School District rolled out the red carpet for area real estate agents on Thursday night—literally—as they gathered at Baldwin High School to watch an 18-minute video that highlights the advantages of living in that district. Guests were entertained by Baldwin High's student orchestra and the Baldwinaires—its noted choir—while they enjoyed hors d'oeuvres in the school's atrium. Students in Baldwin's National Honor Society group then guided the event's attendees down a red carpet to a large group instruction room to view the video before many then remained for a tour of the high school, which recently underwent a $65-million renovation that has earned national …

Jean. You are very naive to think that only Baldwin High School has these issues that you mention. With our society the way it is today I bet you will find that perfect High School you crave is not out there. Go ahead and move to that perfect High School. Let us know when you find it...   more ›

Along with a new contract for service workers and presentations by Director of Technology Tim Winner and Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Dr. John D. Wilkinson, the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board heard and discussed a number of other important items at its meeting on Wednesday night. Some of the highlights of that meeting are as follows: Preliminary Budget for 2012-13 to Be Advertised The school board voted, 6-2, to advertise its preliminary 2012-13 budget, which was explained on Dec. 7 by district Superintendent Dr. Lawrence C. Korchnak as cautious and as a "worst-case scenario." The budget includes a proposed tax hike that could reach as much as an approximately 1-mill increase. On Dec. 7, Korchnak said that, in light of …
