Whitehall's Gibson Helps 'Big Boys' to World Hockey Bronze Medal

The 19-year-old starred against NHL players like Alexander Ovechkin, Fyodor Tyutin and others.

Less than five months after an MVP and gold-medal-winning performance at the Under-20 World Ice Hockey "Junior" Championships, Whitehall Borough's John Gibson is back on the podium, this time with hockey's big boys at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF)'s world championship tournament. Gibson, still just a 19-year-old goalkeeper, moved up on the Team USA depth chart to face NHL stars like Alexander Ovechkin, Fyodor Tyutin and others in the elite hockey tournament held this year in Sweden and Finland. Gibson and the rest of the Americans earned a bronze medal in the tournament after besting Team Finland, 3-2 in a shootout, during Sunday's third-place game. Gibson made 36 total saves against Finland during 60 minutes of regulation…

PHOTOS: Whitehall Library Celebrates 50 Years

Library officials hosted a well-attended event at the South Hills Country Club.

Whitehall Public Library officials celebrated the 50th anniversary of the opening of their award-winning library with an event at the South Hills Country Club this past week. The event welcomed 168 attendees, including U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, state Sen. Matthew H. Smith and state Rep. Erin Molchany, each of whom has a constituency that includes Whitehall Borough. The event also marked the unveiling of the Friends of the Whitehall Public Library's Library Quilt, which was made possible by donations from library patrons who gave money to have the titles of favorite books stitched to the quilt. Baldwin High School's performance of "Hairspray" has been nominated for a local Gene Kelly award this year for Best Musical, and Baldwin students …

Six Gene Kelly Nominations for Baldwin High School

The school has an opportunity to defend its Best Musical title.

Baldwin High School has an opportunity to defend the Gene Kelly Awards' Best Musical title, earning six nominations in 13 possible Kelly categories this year, including that one as well as Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Maggie Brooks, who impressed as "Tracy Turnblad" in "Hairspray," is Baldwin's shot at Best Actress. Brooks was a nominee in the same category in 2011 but did not come away with the hardware. Brooks was also nominated for the Best Supporting Actress award in 2012, helping Baldwin earn the Best Musical award that year. Meanwhile, Greg Arcuri is Baldwin's hope for Best Supporting Actor in 2013 for, oddly enough, his gender-bending portrayal of Tracy's mother "Edna Turnblad." The other acting nomination for Baldwin …

I believe in the impossible. If a few years ago I had been told a substitute teacher would go to a 70,000 position with no experience I'd say impossible. If I was told today a non experienced dean could receive principal papers without ever being in the classroom I'd exclaim impossible, that to is in the works. How easy it is to circumvent the rules these days. So can Baldwin have a winning …   more ›

See How This Local Boy Landed a Prom Date

The Baldwin track & field athlete had a little help from his friends.

He may not have had to go to such great lengths, but after he did, it was sure hard for her to say no. Going great lengths is nothing new for Jared Mott, though, or for his future prom date, for that matter. Both are distance runners on the Baldwin High School track & field team. And now both are headed to Baldwin's 2013 Junior Prom—together. With a little (more like a lot) of help from his teammates, Mott, an 11th-grader, asked 10th-grader Stephanie Bott to the prom during track practice on Thursday at Baldwin Stadium. Their teammates—boys and girls—spelled out the word "Prom?" on the stadium turf for an unaware Bott to see while Mott took her to the top of the stadium bleachers. Assistant Coach Jacqueline Rodgers witnessed the event and …

Follow Baldwin High's 'Odyssey' All-Nighter on Twitter Friday Night

The event will run from 2:30 p.m. on April 26 through 8 the next morning.

How many teenagers would stay up all night to read a 3,000-year-old, 400-page poem? At Baldwin High School, the answer might be more than you think. About 70 freshmen in the high school's Honors English 9 course have signed up to stay awake all night this Friday and read the "Odyssey," an epic Greek poem attributed to the author Homer. "The event is not mandatory, and there is no extra credit," said Keith Harrison, a teacher of the course. "All students, whether they attend the all-nighter or read the book on their own over the next month, have to take the same quizzes and unit exam." The event will run from 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 26, through 8 the next morning in a Baldwin High large-group instruction room. Student teams will tackle …
