The Allegheny County Department of Human Services' Project Prom Shop will again make available free prom dresses to eligible high school girls who find the cost of a prom outfit to be not within their families' budgets. In addition, young men who are or whose families are currently receiving services through that county department are invited to participate in Project Prom 2013 for Gentlemen. The girls event will take place on the third floor of Century III Mall in West Mifflin Borough from Monday, March 11, through Thursday, March 14, from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The boys event takes place in the Human Services Building at One Smithfield Street in downtown Pittsburgh from 5 to 8 p.m. on every Thursday…

The state representative calls for new direction in Harrisburg.

The performance is part of the city's 45th Annual Holiday Choral Program.
The J.E. Harrison Middle School band, chorus and orchestra will join several other local school music groups this holiday season in Pittsburgh's 45th Annual Holiday Choral Program. J.E. Harrison Middle's performance, like all of the program's concerts, will be held on the grand staircase of the Allegheny County Courthouse, 436 Grant St., downtown Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Twenty-four local groups will participate in this year's program. The Harrison students' time to perform is Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 12:20 p.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to the opportunity to watch the performances in person, each performance will be broadcast on the Grant Street side of the county courthouse so that downtown shoppers and workers may enjoy them, as well. The Whitehall Church along East Willock Road played host on Nov. 15 to an annual Thanksgiving celebration, and the event's organizers—South Hills Interfaith Ministries (SHIM)—captured video from the event. Originally organized in 2006 to celebrate both Thanksgiving and the announcement that SHIM was opening the Prospect Park Family Center in Whitehall Borough early the next year, the event has grown by leaps and bounds. Both Republicans and Democrats came out to support the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund on Thursday night.
Usually, audiences at the Pittsburgh Improv are laughing at politicians, but, at Candidates' Comedy Night, they were laughing with them. Pennsylvania's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will open its crisis program centers on Jan. 3, 2011, with a tentative closing date of March 30, 2012. The program may be extended or shortened depending upon the availability of federal funds. During the cold weather season, the LIHEAP Crisis program provides assistance to low-income households that are experiencing heating emergencies, including no heat, lack of deliverable fuels—heating oil, propane and kerosene—and heating system and fuel line repairs and replacements. In order to qualify for LIHEAP Crisis, an applicant must have an emergency situation caused by the utility service to the home being turned off and locked, being without fuel, or having broken heating …

An estimated 200 people from refugee and immigrant families gathered at The Whitehall Church on East Willock.
An annual Thanksgiving celebration organized by South Hills Interfaith Ministries (SHIM) fed about 50 happy people at its first run in 2006. On Thursday night, that number grew to about 200 people, and that's only because The Whitehall Church auditorium couldn't hold anymore. Originally organized to celebrate both Thanksgiving and the announcement that SHIM was opening the Prospect Park Family Center in early 2007, SHIM's annual November dinner has grown to where it took two full bus trips to bring refugee and immigrant families from Whitehall Borough's Wallace (Prospect) Park area to The Whitehall Church on East Willock Road on Thursday. Love this idea! I remember my mom giving me $30 for my prom dress in 1984 and me searching Century III Mall for anything in that price range.
