The state representative calls for new direction in Harrisburg.
State Rep. Martin Michael Schmotzer has issued a news release to thank the residents of Pennsylvania's 22nd House District for the opportunity to serve them. Schmotzer's term in the House comes to a close today, Nov. 30. "It's been an honor to serve and represent the people of the 22nd District," Schmotzer said, "from Brookline and Beechview to Baldwin (Township) and Whitehall (Borough). I kept all my promises to you. I had a 100-percent voting record, I didn't take the health care coverage, and I showed up for work every day. "The most important votes I cast were probably those dealing with the (state) budget," the Democrat and longtime Baldwin-Whitehall School Board member from Whitehall said. "I was adamantly opposed to locking in last …

You can catch video from the event here.
The Whitehall Church along East Willock Road played host on Nov. 15 to an annual Thanksgiving celebration, and the event's organizers—South Hills Interfaith Ministries (SHIM)—captured video from the event. (See video above.) Originally organized in 2006 to celebrate both Thanksgiving and the announcement that SHIM was opening the Prospect Park Family Center in Whitehall Borough early the next year, the event has grown by leaps and bounds. Dinner at the event features meals prepared by families serviced by SHIM, as well as SHIM employees. The choices range from American Thanksgiving staples, such as turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie, to items more typical of some SHIM families' native countries. According to its website, SHIM's …

Both Republicans and Democrats came out to support the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund on Thursday night.
Usually, audiences at the Pittsburgh Improv are laughing at politicians, but, at Candidates' Comedy Night, they were laughing with them. The fundraiser for the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund had politicians reaching across the aisles on Thursday night so that their constituents could roll in them. Among those taking to The Waterfront stage in Homestead Borough to tell jokes, perform skits and even sing for charity were seven politicians directly representing parts of Baldwin-Whitehall: incumbent Democrat Jay Costa, of Pennsylvania's 43rd Senatorial District, which includes Baldwin Borough; Lawrence Maggi, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives' 18th District of Pennsylvania, including Whitehall Borough; …

Pennsylvania's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will open its crisis program centers on Jan. 3, 2011, with a tentative closing date of March 30, 2012. The program may be extended or shortened depending upon the availability of federal funds. An estimated 200 people from refugee and immigrant families gathered at The Whitehall Church on East Willock.
An annual Thanksgiving celebration organized by South Hills Interfaith Ministries (SHIM) fed about 50 happy people at its first run in 2006. On Thursday night, that number grew to about 200 people, and that's only because The Whitehall Church auditorium couldn't hold anymore. Originally organized to celebrate both Thanksgiving and the announcement that SHIM was opening the Prospect Park Family Center in early 2007, SHIM's annual November dinner has grown to where it took two full bus trips to bring refugee and immigrant families from Whitehall Borough's Wallace (Prospect) Park area to The Whitehall Church on East Willock Road on Thursday. Volunteers from Duquesne University, the University of Pittsburgh, Seton-La Salle Catholic High School…

20 Year Resident of Baldwin/Whitehall

Love this idea! I remember my mom giving me $30 for my prom dress in 1984 and me searching Century III Mall for anything in that price range. I found one dress on clearance and bought it...as did two of my classmates...while the other girls had beautiful gowns from bridal shops and "up-doo"s from local salons. I felt horrible that night; embarrassed, I guess. My husband shares a similar story …   more ›
