North Allegheny Too Much for Baldwin in WPIAL Playoffs, 56-33

NA moves on to the quarterfinals. Baldwin's season is done.

North Allegheny High School's girls basketball team hadn't won a game in 10 days—and hadn't even played in one in eight—but the Tigers quickly shook off that rust against Baldwin High School in a WPIAL AAAA playoffs first-round win on Tuesday night. North Allegheny (20-3 overall) won the game's opening tip at neutral-site North Hills High School, got the ball to sophomore forward Meg Morningstar for the first two points and never trailed on its way to a 56-33 pounding of the lower-seeded Highlanders (11-12 overall). WATCH: Highlanders Girls Prepare for Hoops Season

There'll be plenty of challenges for Baldwin, but the team seems ready to adapt.

"Speed and defense." If Head Coach Gavin Prosser has been trying to drive something into the brains of his players this preseason, he's certainly getting that done. When asked to identify what might be the calling card of the 2012-13 Baldwin High School girls varsity basketball team, Prosser mentioned "speed and defense," and that was after two of his players answered the same question with the same three words. The Baldwin High girls have added a promising 6-foot freshman center—Carly Lutz—to their young roster this season, but the team will mostly have to rely on smaller players, most of whom have less scoring pedigree than three of the squad's leaders from a season ago.
