Relay for Life Back at Baldwin H.S. on June 1

The American Cancer Society is organizing its annual Baldwin High School Relay for Life fundraising event that will take place early next month.

Those who wish to participate in the overnight walk around the will gather at the stadium for an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 1, and they won't leave until a closing ceremony wraps up just before noon on Saturday.

The Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature fundraiser where communities come together to remember loved ones lost, to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer and to fight back against the disease.

The fundraiser encourages cancer survivors, cancer patients, medical support staff, corporations, civic organizations, churches and community volunteers to participate by raising money for research. Teams of people from area companies, clubs, neighborhoods and families raise funds prior to the event and then take turns walking the track in relays.

"Relay for Life reminds us that progress has been made in the fight against cancer and that everyone who participates is making a difference," reads a press release from the American Cancer Society.

There will be a special luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. on the first day of the fundraiser at Baldwin. That ceremony is designed to celebrate cancer survivors and to remember those who have died from their illness.
