News Nearby: LEVIN Furniture Holds 17th Annual Golf Event for Charity

Memorial scramble is played in honor of LEVIN's late former president.

The rain may have stopped Robert Levin’s golf game after 16 holes on Monday, but it couldn’t stop LEVIN Furniture from raising close to $25,000 to be split among numerous Pittsburgh-area charities.

LEVIN is no stranger to Baldwin-Whitehall residents with its location just across the border in West Mifflin Borough’s Century Square shopping area.

Many of the charities that LEVIN supports with its annual golf scramble—Monday being this year’s of course—are familiar to Pittsburgh-area residents in general, too. The University of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, the American Diabetes Association and Susan G. Komen for the Cure are just some of the non-profit organizations that receive funds from LEVIN.

The main recipient of the annual golf scrambles’ fundraising is The Howard Levin Clubhouse, named for LEVIN President Robert Levin’s late brother. The Howard Levin Clubhouse helps adults with mental illnesses to develop their strengths and abilities, to build self-confidence, and to gain valuable social and vocational skills.

"This is a memorial tournament for my brother," Robert Levin said. "He was (also) President of LEVIN Furniture.

"We had a golf tournament, sort of a small one (in the past), but it became, now, a memorial tournament in (Howard’s) honor. And it raises money for local charities."

Monday’s event was held at the Youghiogheny Country Club in Elizabeth Township.

"(The event has) been at different places, but we've had it at Yough for the last couple of years," Robert Levin said. "It’s a beautiful course. The staff is outstanding, the food is great, and it’s pretty centrally located between all of our different stores."

LEVIN has 16 locations in Ohio and Pennsylvania combined. Each Pennsylvania store, of which there are eight, is in the Pittsburgh area.

Monday's participants varied from customers and business associates of LEVIN’s to friends and families of LEVIN employees. Golfers paid to play in the scramble, which is the main way that the event raises funds. There is also a Chinese auction in which donors and LEVIN Furniture itself supply prizes.

"We have the support from our vendors," Robert Levin said. "Our furniture vendors, our media vendors, all come once a year, and we have this nice golf outing."

In addition to auction prizes, some prizes were available for leading accomplishments on the golf course, as well.

"Longest drive, lowest score," Robert Levin said. "They should have one for highest score, because I think my team would have won."

The biggest winners of the day, though, were the charities.

"I'm not exactly sure how much we're going to raise today," Robert Levin said after players left the golf course and enjoyed dinner. "My guess would probably be somewhere around $20,000 to $25,000."
