Making Their Presence Felt

Baldwin's swimmers and divers have a strong showing at the WPIAL championships.

sent a total of 12 athletes to the 2012 WPIAL AAA swimming and diving championships, which wrapped up on Friday, and came away with some props to show for it.

Of the 12, four were divers, who competed on Feb. 25 at North Allegheny High School, and all four earned team points for the Highlanders.

Baldwin's juniors Jackie Micklege and Fallon Ferrari placed eighth (11 team points) and 16th (one team point) in girls diving, while sophomore Zach Murrary and junior Adam Grosse placed ninth (nine points) and 15th (two points) for the boys, respectively.

Micklege posted an individual score of 326.45 points, while Ferrari scored 262.60. Murray racked up 280.60 points, and Grosse had 232.85.

But it was Baldwin's boys 200-yard medley relay team that set the standard for the purple and white, placing seventh in that event during the swimming portion of the championships—held from March 1-2 at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool—with a time of 1 minute, 41.70 seconds.

That seventh-place relay finish earned by sophomore Brendan Antenucci (backstroke), senior Mark Tripson (breaststroke), junior Nick Roth (butterfly) and sophomore Zach Ward (freestyle) netted 24 team points for the Highlanders boys, who finished 16th in the WPIAL as a school with a total of 56 points. The Baldwin girls placed 22nd with Micklege and Ferrari's 12 team points.

Also scoring for Baldwin were Antenucci in the boys 100 back with a time of 56.16 seconds, good for 11th place and six team points; Ward in the boys 50 free with a time of 22.85 seconds, good for 14th place and three points; the boys 200 free relay, made up of Ward, Tripson, senior Harley Austin and senior Shane Landy, who placed 14th (six points) with a 1:32.26 time; and the boys 400 free relay, made up of Roth, Landy, Tripson and Ward, who placed 14th (six points) with a 3:24.90 time.

Despite success at the WPIAL championships, Baldwin's 2011-12 swimming & diving season has ended, as no Highlander has qualified for this year's PIAA (state) AAA championships.

AAA is the WPIAL and PIAA's highest swimming and diving classification.
