Highlanders Football Starts Summer Camp

Season begins on Sept. 2 at home against Fox Chapel.

's varsity football team began official on-field preparations for its 2011 season on Monday with a two-session day of summer camp at Baldwin High Stadium.

Baldwin finished 2010 with a 3-6 overall record, including a 2-3 mark in the Great Southern Conference, a WPIAL AAAA (highest) conference.

The Highlanders' plight was due mostly to a midseason, five-game losing streak, but Baldwin rebounded to win two out of its final three games, all conference tilts. Still, BHS missed qualifying for the postseason.

The Highlanders were outscored, 234-195, last year, but hope for better things this season under third-year Head Coach Jim Wehner.

Heavy rain on the first day of 2011's camp didn't stop Baldwin from hitting the field twice in the first of many two-a-day sessions that the Highlanders will need to prepare for another year in the Great Southern, which also includes Bethel Park, , Mt. Lebanon, and high schools.

After a winless 2008 season, Baldwin has maintained steady improvement each year, moving to 2-8 in 2009 and 3-6 in 2010.

Running back Dorian Brown returns to lead the Highlanders. Brown scored 12 touchdowns last year as a sophomore to finish among western Pennsylvania's high school leaders.

Baldwin opens this year at home against non-conference Fox Chapel Area High School on Friday, Sept. 2, at 7:30 p.m.
