The honored its senior student-athletes at an annual banquet at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Fort Couch Road in nearby Bethel Park on Sunday.
The district handed out three major awards at that banquet, including the annual Bress and Karpa awards, as voted on by the Baldwin-Whitehall Athletics staff and and head coaches.
The 2010-11 female Bress Award winner, recognized as the district's female athlete of the year, was Belma Nurkic of 's varsity girls basketball team. Nurkic, a Duquesne University recruit, collected an assortment of WPIAL and PIAA awards over her four years at Baldwin High, including being honored by a number of local news organizations. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, for example, selected Nurkic to its 2010-11 Fabulous Five team on April 7. The Post-Gazette considers players from every WPIAL and City League school for its annual Fab Five squad.
The male Bress Award winner was Paul DeGregorio from Baldwin's cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field teams. In track & field alone this year, DeGregorio earned the Tri-State Track & Field Coaches Association boys 3,000-meter run and the WPIAL boys 3,200 run . He will compete in the 3,200 again this coming weekend at the PIAA championships in Shippensburg.
The Karpa Award, given to the male or female senior letter winner who displays loyalty, devotion, a sense of humor and a deep concern for others, and offers the greatest overall contribution to Baldwin Athletics, was given to Phillip A. Wright of the football and boys soccer and volleyball programs. Wright recently earned first-team all-section honors in volleyball.
"All three of these student-athletes are outstanding students and athletes," said Baldwin-Whitehall Athletic Secretary Cindy Leaf in a press release. "They exemplify the qualities that all of our athletes strive for. Congratulations to all of them.
"We congratulate all of our senior athletes. They are representative of some the finest students in Baldwin High School."
