VIDEO/PHOTOS: Young Scholars Charter School Honors Military Veterans

Rep. Kortz's chief of staff and Bethel Park's mayor among guests at the Baldwin Township school.

The , which opened in in September 2011, invited local military veterans to its campus on Veterans Day to be recognized for their service to the United States.

Among those veterans were Clifford Morton, the mayor of Bethel Park, and Mark Purcell, the chief of staff for , whose jurisdiction includes parts of .

Morton was a drill instructor in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. His full tenure in the Marines was from 1953-58.

Purcell served in the U.S. Navy from 1966-67 and saw time in the Vietnam War, including a period aboard the USS Oriskany with Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Baldwin Township Board of Commissioners member John Paravati also attended Young Scholars' Veterans Day ceremony, which included a performance by the school's fourth and fifth grade chorus, speeches by Morton and Purcell, individual recognition of all U.S. military veterans in attendance and a presentation of gifts to those veterans, some of which are active servicemen/women.

After the ceremony, the veterans went to individual classes and answered questions from students.
