PHOTOS: Int'l Mother Language Day at Young Scholars Charter School

Educators at the Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter School in Baldwin Township continue to expose their students to cultural diversity in a number of ways, including an International Winter Celebration this past December and an International Mother Language Day event on Thursday.

On Thursday, each of the school's classrooms learned about the culture of nine countries with different primary or prevalent languages: Vietnam (Vietnamese), the United States (English), Jordan (Arabic), Kenya (Swahili), Bangladesh (Bengali), Mexico (Spanish), Uzbekistan (Uzbek), Turkey (Turkish) and Zambia (Bemba).

The chosen countries were fitting in that the Young Scholars Charter School has students hailing from homes that each speak at least one of those languages.

This was the second straight year that Young Scholars observed International Mother Language Day—a celebration with roots in what is now Bangladesh.

Young Scholars students learned about the languages, dress, food and other features of the represented cultures. There was an assembly in the morning for the whole school where each class presented what it learned about its assigned culture, and in the afternoon, parents were invited to tour the school's classrooms to observe individual presentations, eat cultural food and see all of the decorations that students made.

Some parents made presentations during the event, as well, about the different cultures that they come from.
