Baldwinaires VIDEO and Remaining Notes from Dec. 12 B-W School Board Meeting

Wednesday night was an eventful one in Whitehall.

Baldwinaires Performance (and Upcoming Shows)

Baldwinaires, a singing group made up of Baldwin High School students, entertained attendees at Wednesday night's Baldwin-Whitehall School Board meeting with three different holiday songs.

Baldwin High music teacher Kris Tranter led the group.

(Watch the video accompanying this article to enjoy that performance.)

On Dec. 16, the Baldwinaires will join the River City Brass Band for a performance at Baldwin High at 2 p.m. Tickets for that event start at $20 each for seniors and $22 each for other adults. Call 412-434-7222 to buy tickets and/or for more information.

And on Dec. 20, a holiday chorus concert, which will include the Baldwinaires, will be performed at the high school at 7 p.m. Tickets for that event cost $5 each. Call 412-885-7500 for more information.

Student Awards

The B-W School Board recognized a number of district students on Wednesday for their recent accomplishments.

- Honored for designing the best holiday greeting cards in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District were Elizabeth Langer (first grade), Kaitlyn Oldaker (fourth grade), Emma Kraus (fifth grade), Alana Eckels (seventh grade) and Joey Esposito (10th grade).

Cherpak Is New District Treasurer

The B-W School Board voted, 8-1, on Wednesday to appoint Mark R. Cherpak as its newest treasurer, starting on Jan. 1.

Cherpak joined the B-W School District on Dec. 3. He will eventually replace district Business Manager and Treasurer William McNamee, who will retire on Dec. 21.

Cherpak will finish McNamee's term as treasurer, which runs through June 30, 2013.

Board member Martin Michael Schmotzer cast the lone "no" vote.

Revised Rates for Policy 707

Although a final revised copy of the policy has not yet been made available to the public, the B-W School Board approved on Wednesday—by a 9-0 vote—revised rates for the use of B-W School District facilities under the district's Policy 707.

Bob - The agenda showed there was supposed to be a presentation addressing Goals, Programs, and Data by Sedlacek, DeFilippo, and Huffman, which I assume is the districts 'academic recovery plan' in response to the recent failure to make AYP in some schools. Was this presentation made, and if so did the presenters provide a handout to the board or use slides? There was nothing attached to the agenda providing any clue to the nature of the presentation, which is so typical of this district.

Board member Martin Michael Schmotzer cast the lone "no" vote to having Mark R. Cherpak as its newest treasurer. This doesn't surprise me one bit as Marty wanted the position so he could have his hand in the cookie jar. I just hope that Marty isn't appointed to any positions that has to do with money as we all know what he did when he worked for Allegheny County.

All the talent displayed (music and art) by our students and their instructors was wonderfully displayed and a beautiful Holiday gift ...thanks for sharing Robert. I really liked the third selection "Carol of the Bells" the best. Also if I was picking out a holiday card for a loved one... I would have chosen the "Seasons Greetings" one.

It's my pleasure, Billee.

Brian, yes, there was a presentation made, but it was too much information to sum up accurately w/o more time needed on my part. The presentation made use of slides.
