Who's That Knocking at Your Door?

Working America to canvas Baldwin Borough neighborhoods.

Chief Michael Scott announced at a Baldwin Borough Council meeting on Tuesday night that he received word of Working America’s intention to canvas residential neighborhoods in . He said that Working America has the legal right to canvas in the area and that the borough has no right to stop it or conduct background checks on its representatives.

Working America is described on its website as a “community affiliate of the AFL-CIO” and “a powerful force for working people.”

The website also reads, “We combine the strength of 10 million union men and women and millions of workers without the benefit of a workplace union who share common challenges and goals to fight in communities, states and nationally for what really matters—good jobs, affordable health care, world-class education, secure retirements, real homeland security and more.”

The purpose of the canvassing is mostly informational, Scott said, and should not involve any solicitation of money other than a $5 fee from residents who wish to join the organization.

Canvassers may be asked to show their credentials in order to verify their identities, Scott said.
