Whitehall Council Pondering Increase in Local Services Tax

Those that work in the borough would face a $52 aggregate charge per year.

solicitor Irving Firman read an amendment to the Whitehall Council on Wednesday night that alters the borough’s code as it relates to the Local Services Tax (formerly known as the Emergency and Municipal Service Tax).

Should the council approve the amendment, all those whose place of employment lies within Whitehall’s borders will be charged a $52 fee per year—collected throughout the year rather than being a one-time charge. That would represent an increase from the borough’s previous charge of $15 per year.

The Whitehall Council expects to vote in December on whether or not to pass the amendment. The amendment would become effective on Jan. 1, 2012.

Taxpayers whose total earned income and net profits from all sources within Whitehall is less than $12,000 per year are exempt from the Local Services Tax.

The increase from $15 to $52 will help Whitehall officials to try to balance next year’s budget.
