Route 51 Eat'n Park to Expand (and More Whitehall Council Notes)

Changes Coming at Route 51 Eat'n Park

Whitehall Borough Councilman Philip Lahr shared the news at Wednesday night's council meeting that big changes are coming at the Route 51 Eat'n Park.

Eat'n Park management is planning on "a great deal of improvements" there, Lahr said, including restroom renovations, an increase in actual building space and the addition of curbside pickup for to-go orders.

Lahr said that restaurant management is still in the process of having its plans approved by Whitehall's Planning and Zoning officials.

No More Curbside Electronics Pickup in Whitehall

Councilman Robert McKown said on Wednesday that, starting on Jan. 1, 2013, solid waste collectors in Whitehall will no longer pick up electronics equipment alongside normal curbside trash.

Electronics equipment includes TVs, computers, monitors and similar items.

SHACOG Pursuing Solid Waste Collection Bids

In other trash-related news, the Whitehall Council, by a 6-0 vote, agreed to have representatives of the South Hills Area Council of Governments (SHACOG) pursue a joint bid for solid waste collection in Whitehall and in other SHACOG communities. (Councilman Harold Berkoben was absent.)

The existing solid waste collection contract in Whitehall is good through 2013, but the new joint SHACOG contract will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

Community Events Promoted

• On Saturday, Nov. 10, the Caste Village Commons (indoor, mall-like area of the shopping center) will host a Holiday Craft Show fundraiser for the Whitehall Public Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Over 45 crafters will be in the Commons area selling a variety of handmade jewelry, clothing, greeting cards, holiday decorations and much more. Plus, shoppers will have an opportunity to win gift baskets filled with goods donated by Caste Village merchants. Admission to the show is free.

• On Sunday, Nov. 11, a Veterans Day celebration will be held in the Whitehall Community Room (next to the library) from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Following a moment of silence during that celebration at exactly 11 o'clock, a continental breakfast will be served. The breakfast will be followed by a presentation of local military veterans' stories. Admission to this Veterans Day event is free, but registration is required. Click here to register.

• From Oct. 28 through Nov. 11, a receptacle will be placed in the Whitehall Library lobby to collect worn and/or damaged U.S. flags for proper disposal. People may visit the receptacle during normal library hours. Click here for those hours.

Red Ribbon Week

Mayor James F. Nowalk has proclaimed Oct. 21-27 as Red Ribbon Week in Whitehall.

Red Ribbon Week celebrates the life of deceased U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration officer Enrique "Kiki" S. Camarena, who was killed in the line of duty in 1985.
