July 18 Whitehall Council Notes

New sewage biller, Veman Avenue work and other items.

New Sewage Biller

Starting in January, property owners will receive their sewage bills from Jordan Tax Service, the Whitehall Council has decided by a unanimous vote.

Borough Manager James E. Leventry made the recommendation to switch from Berkheimer Tax Administrator at a council meeting on Wednesday night.

Leventry said after the meeting that he simply believed that Jordan Tax would do a better job for Whitehall.

Veman Avenue Work

Veman Avenue in front of  will undergo paving repairs on Thursday, which will necessitate the overnight closure of that road from Beall Drive to Rhodes Avenue.

The road will reopen on Friday morning.

Whitehall Councilman Robert McKown, who has been outspoken in his desire to have that part of Veman repaired—see this article's media gallery—said that the closure will allow the repairs to dry.

Tennis Courts Should Reopen Soon

Whitehall's municipal tennis courts, which are being repaved and re-lined, should reopen in early August, Leventry informed meeting attendants on Wednesday.

Library Fundraisers

Councilwoman Linda J. Book promoted two fundraisers that the is holding.

In honor of the library's 50th anniversary in 2013, volunteers are creating a quilt—50 Books for 50 Years—that will hang in the library.

The quilt will display 50 children's book titles and 50 adult titles, and for a $100 donation to the library, a reader can select a title to be stitched into it.

Titles will be recognized not only on the quilt but also in a companion guide that the library will publish. The guide will recognize those who donated and will give those donors an opportunity to express what their titles mean to them. The guide will be displayed alongside the quilt.

The deadline for donations is Aug. 31.

The library is also raffling off a Kindle Fire. Raffle tickets cost $2 each or $5 for four of them.

Tickets are available at the front desk of the library, which is found at 100 Borough Park Dr., Pittsburgh, PA 15236.

The winning ticket will be drawn during Whitehall Community Day, Saturday, Aug. 25, at 3 p.m.

Nowalk Absent

Mayor James F. Nowalk was absent from Wednesday's meeting. He was attending a convention.
