Feb. 16 Borough of Whitehall Meeting Notes

The deadline for fire-station construction bids has been pushed back to April 7. The Recreation Board is still seeking three new members.

The Council of the Borough of Whitehall held a regular council meeting at the  on Feb. 16.

Some of the highlights from the very short meeting, which started at 8 p.m. but was over at 8:38, are as follows.

Attendance was taken at the beginning of the meeting, which revealed three absent council members – Harold Berkoben, Robert McKown and Kathleen N. DePuy. DePuy advised other council members that she would be late for the meeting. She eventually arrived but not until just after the meeting had adjourned.

Enough council members were present, though – Philip Lahr, Glenn Nagy, Vice President William J. Veith and President Linda J. Book – for a valid quorum.

The lack of council members perhaps sped the meeting up since Berkoben, McKown and DePuy were scheduled to contribute to committee reports.

Borough Manager James E. Leventry had plenty to report on, though, including the reading of a proposed ordinance that provides Whitehall with an amount of sewer revenue not to exceed $40,000 as part of a joint effort with the Pleasant Hills Sewer Authority.

That ordinance passed unanimously, 4-0 (with three council members absent).

Leventry presented another item to council – this time for an application by the borough for a loan to fund . A motion to do so passed unanimously.

Related to that motion, Engineer Ruthann L. Omer brought news to the borough council that the deadline for companies to bid on the construction of that new fire station has been moved back to April 7 instead of the original date of March 17 due to mistakes in a borough advertisement calling for bidding on that project.

Omer said that fire-station bids will now be reported to borough council on April 20.

Omer stated at a that the estimated cost for construction of the new fire station is $2.5 million.

Leventry brought up another topic toward the end of the Feb. 16 meeting. He said that .

Also toward the end of the meeting, Book mentioned that the will officially inaugurate its  on March 2 at 7 p.m.

Funding for that project is being made possible by a Senior Spaces grant, which is aimed at providing library spaces, programs and special collections for older adults. The Second Chapter Café has aesthetic appeal, with windows overlooking a hillside, and serves as an ideal meeting place to think, read and discuss literature and current events.

No one accepted Book's invitation for public comments.
