Expanded Grant Program for First Responders to Become Law

State Rep. Bill Kortz praises the Pennsylvania legislative action.

Legislation that will extend and expand a program that annually provides grants to Pennsylvania's emergency responders has been unanimously supported by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Senate.

Senate Bill 866 now goes to Gov. Tom Corbett for his signature.

The bill will increase annual state funding for the grant program from $25 million to $30 million. The increased funding amount will allow the average amount of grants to fire departments to increase from $9,500 to $12,000 and the average grant to volunteer ambulance companies to increase from $4,500 to $5,600.

The program was set to expire at the end of June 2012, but Bill 866 will extend it another four years (through June 2016).

"The bill would go a long way toward helping both volunteer and municipal fire companies,"  (D-Pennsylvania's 38th House District) said in a news release praising the House and Senate action, "as well as volunteer ambulance services. For the first time, the program allows paid, municipal fire departments to participate in the grant program.

"And with more than 2,700 volunteer fire and ambulance companies in Pennsylvania, this will ease the burden of fundraising from the individuals busy saving our property and our lives."

Kortz represents south , among other areas. The bill will affect all of Pennsylvania.

The grants can be used to update facilities, purchase equipment, pay down debt and/or provide training for first responders.

"The program was created to take some of the tremendous fundraising pressure off of volunteer fire and ambulance companies," Kortz said, "and I'm pleased that the Legislature is taking action to ensure it will continue."

This is great, but it prolongs the problem. Fire companies need to consolidate. It would provide good full time jobs for dedicated men and women, it would create better services for the community, and it would decrease taxes for everyone. This bill is great an giving money to volunteers is a great idea but it doesn't solve the problem.

Paid fire department means 4 men or women answering your house fire on one truck. Volunteer companies( same call) bring 20 or 25 men and women and 4 or 5 trucks. Same training same will to save lives and property. What house burned OR who lost thier lives because volunteers were a problem in NB eyes

Mr NB do you give your time to the fire service.DO YOU DONATE.Ya i thought so

NB Resident, I agree with you there, Baldwin Borough has 4 volunteer fire dept and they should have one in North Baldwin and one in South Baldwin. If they would hire paid fireman then who is going to pay for them? There is a few that respond on the Patch that were screaming about a 1/2 mil tax increase for our Schools and they want the people that have children in the schools to pay more in taxes so it isn't a burden on them, but their kids were educated and everyone else paid for their children education though taxes. I'm happy that Tom Colbert passed Bill 866 and they are going to give Emergency Rescues more money for their budget. Next were going to hear that ones that don't like paying school taxes for our children, that only the ones that used the fire dept or ambulance service should pay the salaries for paid fire people.

Mr. Jon Wain, first I am a paid first responder, I was a volunteer fire fighter in Baldwin, second Look at Mt Lebanon who has a department that is paid and volunteer, and how the first truck immediately leaves the station, then when volunteers arrive they take the second and third trucks, I am not bad mouthing volunteer fire services at all, they do a great job and I appreciate them, but the idea that cheap and free fire service is something that we can afford and continue rely on is ridiculous. We must reform the fire service to create good jobs and better services for the community. Mr Wain your sarcastic tone in the post you wrote is unwarranted, learn about someone before you begin to berate them with nonsense. I have been a police officer for 5 years and volunteered for fire service in Baldwin for 3 so I know a little bit about what I am talking about

The only thing I am now having an issue with is replying to a comment made by someone. In the oldRead More environment, if I replied to someone's comment it indented so it was clear which response I was replying. In this new environment, all the comments run together and it's difficult to know which comment I am responding (unless I specify the user name)
