VIDEO: Driver and Passenger Injured in Route 51 Accident

The one-vehicle accident closed all four lanes of traffic.

A man and a woman were injured at around 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident on Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard) near Edgebrook Avenue in Pittsburgh's Brookline neighborhood.

A female passenger was thrown from the vehicle and has been taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to a Pittsburgh police officer at the scene.

The male driver was critically injured, and information about where he was taken was not immediately available.

The accident occurred in front of Ace Electronic Systems at 1621 Saw Mill Run Blvd. (officially in the Overbrook neighborhood), and all four lanes of Route 51—two each heading north and south—were closed between Edgebrook and Colerain/Whited Street until one southbound lane coming from downtown Pittsburgh eventually reopened at around 5:45 p.m.

Both southbound traffic lanes are open immediately past the accident scene. However, southbound traffic is not permitted to turn left onto Colerain due to concerns of traffic backing up there.

As of 6:30 p.m., the two northbound lanes of Route 51 were still closed while crews from Duquesne Light repaired or removed a utility pole that the driver had struck.
