Hazelwood Man Assists Baldwin Police

A man from Pittsburgh's Hazelwood neighborhood followed the driver of a blue Toyota on the evening of June 4 all the way from Hazelwood to the on Joseph Street in north Baldwin Borough under suspicion that the Toyota driver was intoxicated.

A Baldwin police officer arrived at the Shop 'n Save at around 8:26 p.m. and made contact with the Hazelwood man and the Toyota driver, who was identified as Gerald Thomas Williams, 57, of Almora Street in the Carrick neighborhood.

The officer smelled alcohol coming from Williams and observed other signs of intoxication, according to a police report.

Williams refused to be subjected to any field-sobriety tests, but the reporting officer said that Williams could not spell his own name when asked to do so. The officer then arrested Williams and took him to the for a breath-analyzer test.

While at the police station, Williams again refused field-sobriety tests and also refused a breath test. He also refused to go to a hospital for a blood test and refused medical treatment at the police station.

Because of a lack of cooperation, Baldwin police transported Williams to the Allegheny County Jail and are charging him with suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.
