South Baldwin Fire President Says County Made Tax-Exempt Mistake

The news caught Chad Hurka by surprise.

South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company President Chad Hurka was pretty surprised this past week to see that his fire station had appeared on an Allegheny County list of no-longer-tax-exempt properties.

Hurka said that he has placed a couple of phone calls into the Allegheny County Office of Property Assessments in order to find out why South Baldwin Fire was on the list but that he has not received an adequate response yet.

Several property owners in the same situation are also confused, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"We've been nonprofit since we started," Hurka told the newspaper. "I don't know why the county is going after us."

South Baldwin Fire's station (building and land) is assessed by county officials at $766,100.
