Residents Concerned Over Route 51 Pedestrian Safety

Emails to Baldwin police Detective Anthony Cortazzo are needed to ultimately present a case to PennDOT.

A letter-writing—make that email-writing—campaign has been started by a group of residents from near the Route 51-Irwin Drive intersection.

The campaign calls for area citizens to email Detective Anthony Cortazzo (by Thursday, March 29) with their concerns over pedestrian safety along Route 51, particularly between the Route 51 cloverleaf and Streets Run Road, where at least two serious vehicular accidents have occurred since Feb. 1:

The group's organizers say that Cortazzo is working with them to make a compelling case to ultimately take to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to institute changes along Route 51, namely:

  • A turning signal to be installed facing southbound traffic at the Route 51-Irwin intersection
  • A "Warning|Traffic Signal Ahead" sign to be installed prior to the Route 51-Irwin intersection facing northbound traffic
  • A blinking red light facing northbound traffic at the Route 51-Irwin intersection
  • Synchronized traffic lights at Irwin and Grace Street
