Police Seize Large Amount of Marijuana on Route 51

And another case of identity theft in these Whitehall Borough police notes.

Marijuana, Paraphernalia Taken After Traffic Stop

A police officer stopped a motorist in the section of Clairton Boulevard (Route 51) at around 4:21 p.m. on Saturday under suspicion that his vehicle's registration had expired, Deputy Chief Richard M. Danko said.

Upon approaching the motorist—Dominick Mastrogiacomo III, 29, of 8038 Saltsburg Rd. in —the officer smelled marijuana coming from Mastrogiacomo's vehicle, Danko said.

The officer searched the vehicle and found a large bag of marijuana, five smaller bags of marijuana, a digital scale, a box of approximately 200 empty sandwich bags, a plastic bin containing three smoking pipes, and three other pieces of suspected drug paraphernalia, Danko said.

The items were confiscated, and police are charging Mastrogiacomo with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Identity Theft

Earlier on Saturday, at around 11:16, Whitehall police received a report from a Peach Drive resident that someone had conducted fraudulent activity on his First National Bank debit card, Danko said.

The resident received a call from a First National representative on Wednesday reporting that someone had made suspicious charges totaling over $300 on his debit card at a Stop & Shop in New York City.

The resident said that he did not authorize the charges.

Bank security is investigating the identity theft.
