Police Look for Pit Bull's Owner After Biting Incident

The dog's owner has not yet been identified.

A Baldwin Borough police officer went to the Uni-Mart at the intersection of Keeport Drive and Knoedler Road in south Baldwin at around 6:35 p.m. on Nov. 26 for a dog bite incident, according to a police report.

The officer spoke to a victim at the scene, who said that he was bit by a pit bull that was tied up near the Uni-Mart entrance about 30 minutes earlier.

The victim, who works at the convenience store, said that he was taking trash to the store's dumpster when he was attacked by the dog, which had its leash attached to a clothing donation receptacle while its owner was inside of the store.

The victim said that he then spoke to the dog's owner about the attack before the owner took his dog and left the area.

The victim then finished the remaining 30 minutes of his shift at the store and went home. At that point, he said, he told his mother about the incident, and both of them returned to the store to contact police.

The victim did not obtain any of the dog owner's personal information but described him as a black male in his late teens or early 20s standing approximately 6 feet tall with a thin build. The pit bull had white and dark gray coloring.

There were no major injuries reported on the victim other than a bruise on his thigh and a slight break of his skin, according to the police report. The victim said that he is not seeking medical attention but would like to contact the pit bull's owner to be sure that the dog had been properly vaccinated.

The owner of the Uni-Mart is reviewing a security tape of the incident.

A pit bull is only as bad as its owner.
