Pleasant Hills, Baldwin Authorities Called to Scene for Fire at Cloverleaf Village

Pleasant Hills Volunteer Fire Company confines blaze to dumpster, extinguishes it in under 10 minutes from call.

A Baldwin Borough woman passing through nearby Pleasant Hills Borough at approximately 9:30 on Sunday night noticed flames shooting from a dumpster in a parking lot at the Cloverleaf Village apartments complex before calling 911 to report the flames.

Authorities from both Pleasant Hills and arrived at the scene, which is on the border of both municipalities, less than five minutes later.

The Pleasant Hills and departments blocked off the street while the Pleasant Hills Volunteer Fire Company extinguished the flames within 10 minutes of her call.

"I was driving home through Pleasant Hills, and I just noticed flames in the corner of my eye," the woman, who wished to remain anonymous said. "I saw that the dumpster was on fire, so I went up to the next intersection and made a U-turn.

"I saw that there was nobody around, and the dumpster was definitely on fire, so I called 911.

"The dumpster was definitely not being attended to."

The woman also reported hearing a loud pop in the dumpster right after speaking with a 911 operator, but the woman could not say what caused the fire.

"When I saw it, the fire was already very strong," she said. "I was scared because the dumpster was right next to a wooden utility pole and low-hanging branches from a tree."

A firefighter on the scene who fought the blaze said that determining what causes dumpster fires can often be impossible.

"There's so much garbage in there," the firefighter said. "It could be anything."

, which services Pleasant Hills as well as Baldwin Borough, was also on the scene but did not need to attend to any injured people.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
