UPDATE: Pedestrian Hit by Vehicle on Route 51

Woman was apparently trying to catch a bus.

UPDATE (10:17 a.m.): All four lanes are open, and regular traffic has resumed.

A 31-year-old woman, whom Chief Michael Scott said was apparently trying to catch a bus, was struck by a vehicle on Route 51 (Clairton Boulevard) on Wednesday at around 7 a.m.

The accident occurred near the Grace Street-Clairton intersection in south . Articles of clothing and a purse belonging to the woman are still strewn about in the southbound lane of Route 51 as of 9:30 a.m. There is also blood on the road near the woman's belongings. She was not hit in a crosswalk.

The driver of the vehicle—a red Pontiac Vibe—who struck the woman was not identified. The pedestrian was not identified, either, but fire officials on the scene said that she was in serious condition before she was taken by to UPMC Mercy Hospital.

The driver is not reported to be injured, and the pedestrian's condition has not been updated. There is no word yet on whether the driver is being charged with any offense.

Both northbound lanes of Route 51 are closed from near  in Baldwin to near on the border of , and traffic is heavy and moving very slowly through that area. Only one southband lane is open, and crews from and are directing traffic heading north and south to alternate through that one lane.

Access to Route 51 from Grace Street and Brentview Drive is prohibited. (REOPENED NOW.)

I got hit by a car a little over three years ago by a woman making a left-hand turn coming down Grace Street onto Route 51. There were four other people crossing with me at the time and because I was the closest one to her, I was the only one that got hit. She was making a really sharp left as she was in the left turning lane that should be used only if one was going to the laundromat or to Sugar & Spice. The lights need to be changed so that when people are crossing either 51 or Grace, the lights should be red for all vehicles. It is no safer crossing to the crosswalk because cars coming from the north that are making a right onto Grace have a green light at the same time pedestrians have the right to cross. The bus stop needs to be changed to be after Grace Street or it could also be changed to be at Brentview Road. In fact, most people crossing 51 are going to the parking lot and it would be more convenient for them.

Bus drivers typically don't wait for passengers which is probably why she was running across 51. She didn't want to miss it because you never know when the next one will show up. I've been on buses when drivers close the doors and pull away from the stop while people are just steps away from the bus.

I was at the scene of this accident and call 911 and waited for paramedics to get there. I saw what happened and she was in the crosswalk when she crossed she just didnt wait for the light to change to allow her to walk. My heart goes out the her and the driver of this accident and I wish her a full recovery.

I do not care if they are crossing correctly or not, as a driver you are responsible and in full control of a DEATH MACHINE and pedestrians always have the right of way. You never know someone's situation and why they are crossing or not crossing one way or the other. Everyone is always in a hurry, for what? Slow down and save a life. My father was killed right near where this woman was hit. My father was not dumb, thank you very much.

So, it's illegal for cars to move through a marked crosswalk that has no stoplight when a pedestrian is attempting to cross. Not so difficult too understand.
