Man Gets Probation for Child Sex Assault in Baldwin

Thomas Cottrill, 64, who was arrested by Baldwin Borough police at the Nancy Podrat Group Day Care Home in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill South neighborhood in February, has been sentenced to two years of probation for molesting a 7-to-8-year-old girl in 2004.

Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Judge Jill E. Rangos issued that sentence to Cottrill on Monday.

A jury found Cottrill guilty on Sept. 12 of one count each of endangering the welfare of children, indecent assault of a person less than 13 years of age, corruption of minors and indecent exposure.

Baldwin police were involved because the charges stemmed from when Cottrill babysat the girl in 2004 while she lived with her family in Baldwin.

Cottrill, who was once employed by the Nancy Podrat day care center, did not meet the girl through his work there.

In addition to the probation sentence, Rangos also ordered Cottrill to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
