An ammonia leak at Schneider's Dairy on Frank Street in Whitehall Borough sickened 17 employees on Monday afternoon.

Eleven of those employees were transported to hospitals for evaluation, according to Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi.

The ammonia leak was caused while Pennsylvania American Water crews were updating water lines in the area. A lack of water pressure caused the ammonia leak at Schneider's Dairy, according to Dolfi.

The ammonia leak was contained before 3:30 Monday afternoon, and there is no danger for employees or residents, according to the chief. Police made no evacuations in the area.

Whitehall officials are working with the Allegheny County Health Department to monitor air and water levels to ensure safety in the area.

Whitehall police and fire departments and 20 ambulances responded to the ammonia leak.
