Car Over Hillside Along Glass Run Nets DUI Arrest

And a criminal mischief report in these Baldwin Borough police notes.

Car Over Hillside Nets DUI Arrest

Baldwin Borough police officers went to a home on Glass Run Road at around 10:42 p.m. on Thursday for a report of a vehicle driving in the home's yard.

The vehicle—a red 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix—had entered the yard from Cathell Road, gone down a hillside on the home's property and collided with a tree, according to a police report. The vehicle was unoccupied when the officers arrived at the scene, and its engine was still running.

Officers checked the contents of the vehicle and found two cans of Miller Lite and a debit card with the name "Brian Bernthaler" on it. The vehicle was also registered in Bernthaler's name.

Officers from the Mt. Oliver Police Department went to Bernthaler's address on Brownsville Road in Pittsburgh's Carrick neighborhod to try to make contact with him, but he was not there.

Prior to hitting the tree, Bernthaler's vehicle damaged a vehicle belonging to the owner of the Glass Run home, which was parked on the property. The owner's vehicle was struck on its rear, and officers observed scratches, dents and paint transfers from the Grand Prix.

Baldwin Borough officers, while searching a wooded area approximately 40 yards from the Glass Run home, found a male lying down and holding a cellphone. He was identified through his driver's license as Bernthaler, 38 years old.

A Baldwin Emergency Medical Services crew arrived at the scene to check on Bernthaler and reported him as having minor injuries, according to the police report, but since Bernthaler was complaining of a head injury, he was not put through field-sobriety tests.

Nevertheless, he was arrested and taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center for a blood test—results pending—before being released to the custody of his girlfriend.

While being taken to Jefferson, police report that Bernthaler admitted to wrecking the Grand Prix. And while at the hospital, police report that Bernthaler admitted to drinking alcohol a short while before driving.

He is being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Criminal Mischief Claim on Kirk Avenue

A Baldwin police officer went to the 500 block of Kirk Avenue at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday for a criminal mischief report.

A resident there said that someone had slashed the tires of his vehicle sometime overnight, but since the resident had the tires replaced before the officer arrived, the crime could not be verified.
