Baldwin Borough Police Chief "Arrested"

Chief Michael Scott taken to Joe's Crab Shack "jail" to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy Association.

police Chief Michael Scott usually arrests people for doing dirty deeds. On Wednesday, the chief was arrested for doing a very good deed.

Representatives from a western Pennsylvania branch of the Muscular Dystrophy Association "arrested" Scott at the  on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and took him to a makeshift jail at Joe's Crab Shack in Pittsburgh's Station Square.

Scott was one of 48 volunteers to serve time at Joe's on Wednesday. Friends of the inmates, including the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch, put up money to bail them out, and with Scott's approximately $500 in donations, he was released at around noon.

In all, the MDA has raised about $20,000 and counting on Wednesday, and donations are still being accepted for the next 45 days. You can donate in Chief Scott's name at this website.

Wendy Murdy, executive director of the western PA branch of the MDA, said that the purpose of Wednesday's lockups were to pay for local children (aged 6 to 18) with a neuromuscular disease to enjoy a week of modified activities, such as swimming, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding and more, at Zelienople's Camp Kon-O-Kwee.

"Anything that they want to do is modified, so that they can feel like any other kid for that week," she said.

Murdy said that it takes $800 to send one child to the camp and $3,000 to fill one cabin (four children). The camp will run from Aug. 6-13, this year.

Scott encouraged interested donors to take advantage of the next 45 days to add to his total.

Scott's tie-in to jails and bails was a natural fit for the fundraiser, but other volunteers, such as Sara Traeger, a special-education teacher in the McKeesport Area School District, joined the effort simply to contribute to a good cause.

"It's an awesome cause," Traeger said. "A friend of mine used to work closely with the MDA, and she recommended it. She knows that I like to be involved with volunteering and that I have a special place in my heart for children with disabilities."

Traeger has raised approximately $385 so far. Click here to donate in Traeger's name.
