Baldwin Borough Police Briefs (April 24-May 1)

Baldwin police report four DUI charges and two theft investigations.

DUI, Part I

On April 24 at approximately 11:19 p.m., a officer stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Becks Run Road and Hopeland Street in the Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh for what the officer determined to be speeding in the Baldwin section of Becks Run, as well as for driving into the oncoming lane of traffic.

While speaking with the driver of the vehicle in question, the officer reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver’s breath.

After the driver—Anton Stewart Barbaryka, 41, of 2612 Brownsville Road, Apt. 6, in Carrick—failed a breath-analyzer test, the officer put Barbaryka through field-sobriety tests and then arrested him.

Barbaryka was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center for a blood test before being released to the custody of a friend, who was a passenger in Barbaryka’s vehicle at the time that it was pulled over. The friend had met Barbaryka and police at Jefferson. Results of Barbaryka’s blood test are pending.

Police are charging Barbaryka with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license (from a prior DUI conviction), failure to drive within a single lane of traffic and failure to signal while turning.

DUI, Part II

On April 25 at approximately 1:19 a.m., a Baldwin Borough police officer stopped a vehicle in the borough’s 4800 block of Streets Run Road for what the officer determined to be speeding on Streets Run, as well as for driving into the oncoming lane of traffic.

While speaking with the driver of the vehicle in question, the officer reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver’s breath.

The officer put the driver—Craig Douglas Lydon, 21, of 525 Crestline Drive in —through field-sobriety tests and then administered a breath-analyzer test, which yielded positive results.

Lydon was arrested and taken to Jefferson for a blood test. Results of that test are pending.

Police are charging Lydon with DUI and with failure to obey a traffic-control device.

Theft, Part I

On April 26 at approximately 1:58 p.m., Baldwin Borough police responded to a call from the owner of an apartment building on Wolfe Drive.

The owner said that a new lawnmower that he had recently purchased had been chained to the rear entry of that building on the evening of April 22 but that he had discovered the mower missing (and the chains cut) on April 26.

The owner valued the lawnmower—a Bolens Push Mower 5—at $149.

Police are investigating.

DUI, Part III

On April 30 at approximately 12:16 a.m., a Baldwin Borough police officer stopped a vehicle on Custer Avenue, which spans Baldwin and Carrick, for what the officer determined to be speeding on Baldwin’s nearby Joseph Street, as well as for partially driving into the oncoming lane of traffic.

While speaking with the driver of the vehicle in question, the officer reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver’s breath.

The officer put the driver—Randy Jay Eckenrode, 34, of 2816 Churchview Ave., Apt. 3, in Brentwood Borough—through field-sobriety tests before arresting Eckenrode and taking him to Jefferson for a blood test. Results of that test are pending.

Eckenrode was eventually released to the custody of his live-in girlfriend.

Police are charging him with DUI, failure to drive within a single lane of traffic, failure to drive at a safe speed and careless driving.

Theft, Part II

On April 30 at approximately 5:45 p.m., Baldwin Borough police responded to a call from a woman who said that her son’s baseball bat had been stolen from the  on Churchview Avenue.

The woman valued the bat—a 32-inch; 28-ounce; black, red and white DeMarini model—at slightly over $100.

Police are investigating.

DUI, Part IV

On May 1 at approximately 2:09 a.m., a Baldwin Borough police officer stopped a vehicle in the borough’s 2100 block of Streets Run for what the officer determined to be erratic driving on that road.

While speaking with the driver of the vehicle in question, the officer reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle.

The officer put the driver—Gary Bevan Jr., 25, of 413 Reifert St. in the Knoxville neighborhood of Pittsburgh—through field-sobriety tests before arresting Bevan and taking him to the Baldwin police station.

At the police station, Bevan twice failed a breath-analyzer test. He was eventually released to the custody of a friend.

Police are charging Bevan with DUI and with failure to drive within a single lane of traffic.
