Accident on East Carson, Two DUI Arrests in These Baldwin Boro Police Notes

New Year's Day accident caused the closure of East Carson from Becks Run to the Glenwood Bridge area, and more news from Jan. 1-8.

New Year's Day Accident on East Carson Street

Two vehicles collided with one another on East Carson Street between Becks Run Road and the Glenwood Bridge area in north  at around 5:25 p.m. on New Year's Day, causing East Carson to be closed in that area for about one-and-a-half hours while one driver was mechanically removed from a vehicle.

The driver who caused the accident was traveling south on East Carson behind another vehicle when he attempted to pass it. The passing vehicle did not get out of the opposite, northbound lane of traffic in time to avoid a collision with a northbound vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle that was being passed witnessed the accident close-up but was not injured. Amazingly, the witness' vehicle was not damaged, either.

The northbound vehicle that was hit by the passing driver careened into the southbound lane and came to a rest at about 20 yards past the point of impact.

The passing, southbound vehicle continued on for about one-quarter of a mile before coming to a rest further down the southbound lane.

The driver of that vehicle had to be mechanically removed from it and taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital by Pittsburgh Emergency Medical Services. The northbound driver was taken to UPMC Mercy by . Their conditions are not known, but their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Both vehicles were damaged and towed away.

DUI Arrest from Prospect Road Driving

A officer on patrol reported observing a driver speeding and operating a vehicle erratically on Prospect Road at around 2:43 a.m. on Jan. 7.

The officer then began following the driver—Corey Hawkins, 26, of 3728 Churchview Ave. in Baldwin Borough—and reported that Hawkins also failed to obey a stop sign at the intersection of Prospect and Hollyrood Drive.

The officer eventually pulled Hawkins over in the nearby 1700 block of Skyline Drive as he entered 's area.

While speaking with Hawkins, the officer reported detecting a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The officer also reported that Hawkins admitted to recently drinking alcohol.

The officer put Hawkins through field-sobriety and breath-analyzer tests, and reported that he failed them all. Hawkins was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center for a blood test. Results of that test are pending.

He was eventually taken home and released.

In addition to the DUI charge, Hawkins is being charged with careless driving. UPDATE: The careless driving charge was . 

DUI Arrest from Route 51 Driving

A Baldwin Borough police officer on patrol reported observing a driver failing to signal while turning left onto Route 51 from Streets Run Road at around 1 a.m. on Jan. 8.

The officer reported that the driver—Robert Alan Gneuhs, 68, of 5272 Keeport Drive, Apt. 6, in Baldwin Borough's —then went onto a curb in front of for about 20 feet before eventually changing lanes without signaling.

Gneuhs eventually turned right onto Grace Street and then right onto Macassar Drive. The officer then pulled Gneuhs over near the Macassar-Holdsworth Drive intersection.

While speaking with Gneuhs, the officer reported detecting a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The officer also reported that Gneuhs admitted to recently drinking alcohol and that Gneuhs nearly fell multiple times while conversing with the officer outside of his vehicle.

The officer determined that field-sobriety tests would be unsafe for Gneuhs. The officer arrested him for suspicion of DUI and took him to the Baldwin police station, where the officer reported that Gneuhs failed a breath-analyzer test. 

He was eventually taken home and released to the custody of his wife.

In addition to the DUI charge, Gneuhs is being charged with failure to signal while turning and careless driving. (UPDATE: The careless driving charge was .)
