Sound Off: If You Could Start Any Small Business, What Would it Be?

What small business would you like to try in Baldwin-Whitehall?

With Small Business Saturday here on Nov. 24, we're starting this conversation: If you could open any small business in Baldwin Borough, Whitehall Borough or Baldwin Township, what would it be and why?

We've posted quite a few Visions for Vacancies articles, but now, we're asking you what business that you'd like to try yourself to make successful in our district.

You can pick the spot—Route 51, Curry Commons, Caste Village, Streets Run Road, McNeilly Road, Brownsville Plaza, Churchview Avenue or somewhere else. You name it.

What would you sell, and why?

I was *this* close to opening a bake shop in Curry Commons back in August. Ideally, though, I would open that bake shop in Caste Village. Large enough for a few tables, I'd also make pancakes for breakfast and paninis at lunch.

... at Brownsville Plaza, a weekly "paper" newspaper, open 7 days a week, with production on-site where people could participate, watch it being made, and also use the equipment for learning and for their own projects.

First off, I would rent someplace along Rt.51 and have a bake sale. Then I would use the proceeds of that bake sale to hire a squadron of US Air Force bombers to carpet bomb Rt.51 from the Liberty Tunnels to Rt.88 in order to get rid of every shady used-car lot and dilapidated ramshackle lot on that road. Then we would raise a militia to occupy the road & force the PA state legislature to fund a project to turn Rt.51 into the 8-lane highway that it needs to be, so that no South Hills resident ever has to sit in that god-awful traffic ever again. So, who wants to be a part of the bake sale? I'm guessing darn near everybody.

I would like to open a place called the “Barter Barn" in the 2,000 SF vacant space in the Bottom Dollar shopping center. This store will be open to the public where people could come to trade various things with each other…….sounds like a pawn shop, you say….NAY! What would make the “Barter Barn" so unique is that you are only allowed to trade translucent things with each other. For example, one could trade a smile, for a hug ($30) or even a compliment for a high five ($50). The very adventurous type would trade insults for gratuitous provocations ($350). This of course is only if I may be so bold. I would also have an area where I would set up a table and chair for Baldwin High School’s own “Legend of Destruction” Albert Surman, to sign autographs. This service will cost nothing and will instead require the LOD (Legend of Destruction) to give you a $1.00 off coupon for a haircut at Sargo’s Barber shop.
