Verizon has notified Allegheny County Emergency Services of an issue affecting landline telephone service in the Brentwood-Whitehall area. Residents in that area without a dial tone who need emergency services should use a cellphone to call 9-1-1.

Allegheny County officials have notified public safety agencies in the immediate area, including county police, local police, fire departments and emergency medical personnel. (Baldwin Borough and Baldwin Township are not believed to have been affected.)

A spokesman for Verizon said that the outage initially affected 84 homes around the Brownsville Road-Dewalt Avenue intersection on the border of Brentwood and boroughs when a manhole in that area had flooded, causing water damage to a copper cable that contained many individual phone lines.

The cable has since been dried out, and service has been restored to many homes. The remaining homes without service will have their service restored as soon as possible, the spokesman said, as Verizon crews will work over the weekend to try to replace permanently damaged pieces.

Residents with questions regarding their landline service should use another phone service to contact Verizon directly at 800-VERIZON (837-4966), or they could visit www.verizon.com.
